What are some long running franchises that haven't had an entry in years and look likely to be over with?
It's pretty rare if you think about it, there's plenty of games that never got a sequel and plenty of games that only got one or two, but usually if something has made it past 3 entries it goes on pretty much indefinitely or at least for a very long time, but what are the series that were popular to be full on franchises (including reboots and spinoffs) but don't seem likely to come back?
The first that comes to my mind is Prince of Persia in the longest running franchise that seems unlikeliest to come back, Prince of Persia is especially noteworthy since it burned out once before before managing to stage a big come back with Sands of Time, however that ran it's course (I myself hated Warrior Within and never bothered with Two Thrones even though I heard it was an improvement) and the 2008 reboot failed and that leaves only the 2010 Forgotten Sands spinoff to tie in with the movie and that's that, there was a rumor that Ubisoft was going to do an "open world" reboot but that either evolved into or always was Assassin's Creed Origins, which open world probably wouldn't be a great and outside of open world games Ubisoft seems increasingly focused only on games with some sort of online component, neither approach really seems to fit Prince of Persia so it's likely to stay dormant.
But there's plenty more beyond that of course, you can name almost any Konami franchise for example like Castlevania, Contra and Silent Hill and those all seem pretty dead (unless you're talking a pachinko machine which does not count) and with Capcom Mega Man seems pretty dead, there's also of course..... Half-Life.
But what are some other examples?

Mega Man and Contra are two of my most favorite series of all time, so their absence over the past several years has really hurt I always feel sad whenever I think about Legends 3.

I think Capcom feels Mega Man ran it's course, which is of course arguable but somewhat understandable, but Konami just does not give a fuck. I have this dream that one day Konami will undergo new management and we'd get quality reboots of all their big franchises, Castlevania for example I could see working very well as Soulsborne type game and RE7 makes me wonder what a Silent Hill in that style could be like, but it seems like just a pipe dream. But isn't it kind of surprising that around the time of all these western developed takes on Konami franchises like Silent Hill Homecoming and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow there wasn't a Contra reboot in the vein of Gears of War?

Legends 3 is better left to our imaginations. They had no ideas even in the earliest stages of development. I remember even saying something to that effect when they were shopping “the community” to vote on their concept drawings. That’s a red flag.

Nah, the person that was leading all Megaman projects was Keiji Inafune. Once Capcom fired him, Megaman died with him. Noticed how he and inti-creates (the devs of Megaman 9, 10 and MMXZ) are the ones doing Megaman clones like Mighty no 9, Azure Striker Gunvolt and Mighty Gunvolt.

That is literally not true at all. Capcom was working on Mega Man Universe and Mega Man Legends 3 (as well as was considering that FPS Mega Man X reboot), up until Keiji Inafune left the company. After his departure, then both Mega Man Universe and Mega Man Legends 3 were delayed, up until being cancelled outright. Clearly it was not down to a "lack of ideas". Also, there have been a bunch of Mega Man sub-series, so if they really wanted, they could easily just make a new one and take the series in another new direction. They don't need to make a Mega Man 11 or a Mega Man X9 or whatever (but they totes for sure should rly make Legends 3 omg).

ReyVGM: And yet, he had little to no involvement in the development of X5, X6, X7 and X8. As much as we would like to believe otherwise, even creative leads are replaceable. Dead franchises? Commander Keen, obviously.

Commander Keen, obviously. So? That happened because he wanted to end the X series and Capcom didn't. Because Megaman was still popular enough to sell. I'm not saying no one will be ever able to make another Megaman within Capcom. What I'm saying is that when the mastermind of the series, the one that created or supervised every new game, when someone like that leaves, then it's not always so easy to just put another team to make sequels (as you saw how bad X6, X7 and X8 were). Not only that, but Capcom nowadays is not really interested in sequels to a lot of their games, unfortunately.

A full-fledged sequel to Metal Slug ain't gonna happen in this decade, right? Especially when SNK sticks to their fighting game series, which is good but still underwhelming.
New OutRun would be welcome, instead of shoveling up original arcade game nth time.

The Growlanser series
The remake of Growlanser IV (PSP) was awesome, but it sold really awful in Japan. At year 2019 Growlanser will have a new anniversary. It seems possible that the team behind Growlanser (worked at Shin Megami Tensei x FE as well Radiant Historia 3ds Remake) could do another one, but everything says no.
Dino Crisis - it is dead, so dead, not even teasing like at Onimusha or putting Easter Eggs in some games, it is dead
-Disaster Report I know one game is in development, but the production had so much trouble, I honestly don't know what to think
-Condemned
-Majin Tensei It got kinda a soft reboot through the cell phone trilogy in the 2000's, but after that, the series died.
-Valkyrie Profile I am still waiting for Hrist.
-Depth Heaven series from Sting
I honestly liked their creative approach to their gameplay in that series. Too bad, they stopped their agreement with Atlus, since then, they only work with other developers at some games like Utawarerumono and Idea Factory.
Yours sincerely
Jack Caeylin

Command & Conquer. While Tiberium Alliances (a browser game) is still alive and supported, we haven't see a main entry in the series since 2010, and Generals 2 was cancelled twice. Same goes for the Dune RTS series, which has the additional hurdle of being licensed.
Mega Man. There was this Korean-exclusive mobile game they released a while back, but the main series died with MM10. I can't believe that MM9 came out almost ten years ago. Also, there's an upcoming Mega Man cartoon, so I suppose that's something.
