Steam pageOfficial Site (includes non-Steam download)(the game is free, both on Steam and on the official site) So... I'm reluctant to go into detail about this, because this really is the kind of game that is best experienced blind, without any preconceived notions about what you'll be experiencing. I will say though, that you should take its content warning on the download page/in the opening screens of the game seriously. This game is free, so if you want to avoid spoilers, it would be best to just stop reading right now, and play through it. It's not a particularly long game; it could probably be finished in under five hours. In case you decide to read on, however, I'll try to at least keep this opening post as non-spoilerish as I can. So... Doki Doki Literature Club is a visual novel, wherein you interact with several cute high school girls in hopes of dating one of them. It's pretty typical anime fare... aside from the fact that the game's download page and opening screens both warn that this game is "not suitable for children or those who are easily disturbed". Besides that, Doki Doki Literature Club appears to be a typical cute, fun anime-style game... until suddenly you realize you're experiencing a truly subversive psychological horror story. I really, really enjoyed this. It's been over a day since I finished it, and I can't stop thinking about it. Personally, I think this game is well-written and interesting enough that even if you're getting an idea of what to expect when playing it, or you happen to accidentally get part of it spoiled ahead of time... you'll still likely have an interesting time going through it. I'm not yet sure where exactly I'd place Doki Doki Literature Club in terms of my favorite games I've played this year, but at the moment it's rivaling Cuphead and Resident Evil 7 for my favorite game of 2017. It really is something special, in a way that I don't think could be achieved in another medium. Also, Monika could very well be one of the most interesting, memorable characters I've seen in a game. I have so many mixed feelings right now. Ugh.
So, has anyone else here finished the game? What did you think about it? Feel free to discuss spoilers in this thread (though maybe consider tagging them in case those who haven't played this decide to lurk down the first page a little )

Fine, fine, I'll play the damn thing. Going to have to wait until at least 1/1 to take credit for it in the game completion thread, though...

Hey, I talked about this in the Indie Games topic, just in time for Halloween, and nobody cared! Why nobody listens to me either online or IRL ...but anyway, it's really a very good, interesting and thought-provoking game. What surprised me the most (other than some particular game mechanics) is how frank and realistic it is in talking about clinical depression and its consequences. If JDarkside still wrote on this forum I would have argued that, despite not having been made with this purpose, it does a much better job in talking about depression than shitty "games" like Depression Quest and the like. Also, for being supposedly shallow satires of anime "moe" stereotypes, the girls really do have interesting characters and back stories, for what little the game tells us.

Hey, I talked about this in the Indie Games topic, just in time for Halloween, and nobody cared! Why nobody listens to me either online or IRL Most people are readers and less writers in this board. I started to play some games that nerdybat mentioned, but I never said it. I visit this board since ages and I still remember Jason X thread about Angela Lansbury porn, but I never mention it until now. One reason why I kinda like the "Like button", because "thank you" and similar short answers have kinda inappropiate sarcastic subtext in todays internet era. regarding the thread title: I won't play it. It is interesting, but Visual Novels are known for having strong pacing problems. I am done with Visual Novels with post 2007 releases, especially with the Harem casting. It seems to be a nice throwback to the SEGA Saturn Visual Novels due to the idea and content, but I feel like old Snake from MG with this genre. Yours sincerely Jack Caeylin

I forgot there even was an Indie Games thread Regardless, I think this game deserves its own separate thread; it's been rising in popularity enough to where it now has over one million downloads. Anyways, yeah, the portrayal of mental illness was pretty effective in this. I liked Depression Quest's portrayal too, though! I think they're both pretty good at it, for somewhat different reasons. I feel like the girls are torn between being half-boring cliches, and half-interesting characters. It's tough to say how much of their clicheness is due to the game's inherent design, or due to Monika's altering of their personalities.

Well, it's free so why not. I already downloaded it and will try it out this weekend (send me a reminder ). I kind of know it's not what it seems to be, but that's all.

It does take a while to get to the good part, at the start it will feel like a generic tacky romance game, to lure players into a false sense of security...what? At this point, everyone already knows the game isn't as it seems, still feels worth pointing out that it doesn't start crazy. I have to say, it's a fun experimental game, even if i find it a bit overrated and overblown, there are some neat ideas and moments, including some genuinely scary ones like the Yuri scene but still a bit overblown.
Still, i like the idea of a self-aware yandere character falling in love for the player, DDLC is not the first game to do that(see Kimi to Kanojo to Kanojo no Koi for that), true, but it's free, in english and there are a lot of small details that show a lot of work and though went into it.

I had some free time today so I decided to play it. Wow. Good ideas and mechanics, I wouldn't mind seeing more (experimental) games like this. Also DEFINITELY not what it seems to be, and more intense than anything I expected. Sayori... well, that shocked me... and then I-I was s-s-s-scared the rest of the playthrough. I picked what I felt like so I naturally leaned towards Yuri, who also had some nasty surprises. Thanks to X-perMONIKA and others for bringing this to our attention! I may attempt to explore it a bit more and maybe get this alternate ending I've read about after ruminating some more on the game. Game? What am I even talking about? And that's Purple Moss's writing tip of the day!

I'll have to look into that one you mentioned Honestly, I think Doki Doki Literature Club might be my favorite game of 2017 I just feel like it came together really well. The first act does a great job of catching the player off-guard while still subtly hinting at what's to come. Act 2 is horrifying (I actually felt uncomfortable walking around my house in the dark for a few days after finishing it, thanks to the glitches and off-key music and Monika and Yuri and whatnot). Act 3 blew my mind. And then Act 4's lead-up into the credits felt like a wonderful conclusion to me. It was enough to make me cry. I really really loved my time with DDLC <3

I really really loved my time with DDLC <3 To be fair, DDLC is better than the Visual Novel i mentioned, just find it funny that the whole 4th Wall Breaking Yandere in love with the player part had already been done before.
And yeah, act 2 is crazy and scary, man, that scene where Yuri goes mental is just...damn.
Honestly, if i had any complaint, it's that i would have liked to see more of Natsuki, i don't mind tsunderes, she was cute, her family situation felt like it could have been expanded upon more, and damn, that scene where she ask the main character to help figuring out what's wrong with Yuri is just great and shows that even with Monika trying to make her worse, that Natsuki is still not a terrible person.
And i too should play more visual novels, funnily enough, i do tend to buy them and when i play them i tend to like it, but alot of the time i forget about them and just leave it taking space on my laptop...still have some like STEINS:GATE to play.
But aside from DDLC, which is indeed a great game, i think the last visual novel i played was Highway Blossoms a few months ago, a lesbian romance visual novel where a trucker girl picks up a hitchhiker and they end up travelling through America hunting for treasure and just going to see monuments and fun places in America and getting closer...nothing dark or meta but it was really sweet and better than i was expecting...i am guessing it's not the kind of visual novel you are looking for, but if you don't mind yuri, that's another recommendation right there.

I feel like the girls are torn between being half-boring cliches, and half-interesting characters. It's tough to say how much of their clicheness is due to the game's inherent design, or due to Monika's altering of their personalities. Well developer Dan Salvato had said that he made the game because of his love/hate relationship with anime and anime tropes, so them being cliches is definitely intentional, but I admit I never understood whether Monika "merely" enhances the negative qualities of their personalities, like Sayori's depression and Yuri's self-harm, or whether she completely rewrites their characters in order to make them unappealing to the player and thus letting him choose her by default. But I guess it's intentionally left ambiguous so we'll probably never know. Also what do you think about the hidden messages in the game's .CHR files?

Does this VN get gorey or anything? Or just really surreal and spooky? I tend to have pretty bad reactions to certain sorts of gore. I can handle RE4 but Hotline Miami made me feel ill and I can't play it. I'm fine with the Corpse Party games and VNs though, if that's a useful reference point. Visual Novels? I usually read a book or watch a movie, sorry , but i like the art in some of them I never really get these reactions, to be honest. I have a degree in English lit and I still read "trashy" stuff like VNs. If you're down with the art, which is the most common turn off, I'd say you should give them a shot!
