So recently I picked up Speed Racer for SNES. I only played a bit of it but there's a bit of a dichotomy: the first level as you'd expect is racing, and yes you can make the Mach 5 jump (no sawblades though)... its not bad but the scrolling is choppy especially compared to like F-Zero, but also the courses have hills and such, so maybe that's why.
But then in the second level it becomes a side-scrolling platformer. One with strange controls. Okay the controls in racing were kinda odd too (Y is accelerate, I think just so B could be jump) but they made sense, but in the side-scroller level... holding Y makes you run, B jumps, X and A are for punching and kicking respectively. But like its not a beatemup or anything, even tho it apparently was trying to be one.
Still, so far it hasn't struck me as bad, just average, tho interesting for a Speed Racer fan like me.
..... So I'm wondering:
I recall there being a Speed Racer game for PS1. Anyone ever play that? how was it?
Also I recall there being a licensed game based on the movie. How was that?
Thanks.

I may have the Speed Racer (Mach Go! Go! Go!) game for PS1 lying around somewhere. It's been a long time.
It was decent, and it felt anime accurate as far as being able to access gadgets and such. I'm not a big Speed Racer fan, so I never played it through. But the controls and gameplay felt very easy to deal with; arcade-style player friendly.

So what about the one based on the 2008 live action movie.? The one on the Wii? Never played it but I did see footage of it I think, didn't look terrible but not something worth tracking down today.

There is also an arcade Speed Racer game made by Namco with hideous computer-rendered sprites for the cars. Never played it but it does appear to be somewhat playable in MAME.

After browsing Wikipedia there is at least one other obscure Speed Racer game rarely mentioned: Speed Racer in The Challenge of Racer X. It was made for DOS by the good folks of Accolade, also responsible for the early Test Drive games and the infamous Bubsy. But it doesn't play like Test Drive, but instead appears to be a simple Outrun/Lotus clone for DOS.

Methinks I might have to track down this Challenge of Racer X.
I recall trying to emulate the arcade game but I found it weird somehow. Possible that there was some emulation glitch that ruined the fun for me but I can't remember deets.
IIRC the movie-based game also appeared on the PS2 and Gamecube? I actually really liked the movie and if the races in the game have anywhere near the sense of frenetic speed the one in the movie did then I'm sold.

Don't know it for a fact, but if the movie was 2008 then I doubt it was on the Gamecube as I'm pretty sure there was never another Gamecube release after Nintendo abandoned after the Wii came out in 2006. However a PS2 port is very likely as Wii games like Silent Hill Shattered Memories and Indiana Jones and The Staff of Kings were getting PS2 ports as late as 2009.

I remember it being closer to DOS cartgames like whacky wheels or skunny kart, or something like crazy cars 3 on DOS, than to something like outrun or lotus (which in my mind also play very differently from one another)..Not good memories though.

According to a mention on TV Tropes, the movie-based game (they single out the Wii version) is actually considered "a pretty good F-Zero knockoff." Hey, the movie felt like an F-Zero movie, so it sounds like exactly what I would want. Pretty sure a PS2 version does exist--if I see it, I'm grabbin' it. The PS1 game too--what little I've read says it is pure racing unlike the SNES game. Unrelated, but I feel like I'm the only guy who is excited that Funimation released a megaset that includes not only the original 1960s anime, but the (never before released on home media even in Japan) 1997 anime. It's kinda sad that Speed Racer is mostly just known as a corny relic... (he says, in this secret film filmed secretly) (Okay I won't lie, I smiled big when I got to the first side-scrolling level of the SNES game and the story cutscene mentioned the Car Acrobatics Team... then I got nitpicky when it said they were reporting to "Commander Terror." I thought their leader's name was Snake Oiler? Yes, I AM a huge nerd!)

But Wacky Wheels/Skunny Kart is an obvious Mario Kart clone, and Crazy Cars 3 aka Lamborghini American Challenge is literally a Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge clone.

That's if people know Speed Racer at all, the live action movie tanked badly and that was almost a decade ago (I saw it in theaters though!) I myself only saw the original show because they played reruns on Cartoon Network when I was a kid (wish it had been episodes of Cutie Honey instead... heh heh)

I have the Wii game and it’s actually a really fun and stylish arcade racer, if somewhat shallow in the long run. It also has a surprisingly great sense of speed, better than some of the more ”serious” racers I can think of.
