Sorry if this was already answered, but how are we handling roguelikes and NG+ this year?

Most roguelikes can probably be beaten, right? If it's a game where the next 'try' is affected by the previous one, so you get stronger or something every time you try, make sure you started the game after the deadline. Other than that, I don't see what would be special about roguelikes.
If a NG+ lets you play the game again but with all your experience or equipment or whatever intact, that doesn't count.

Fair enough. I was thinking about roguelikes with multiple characters/classes, would one playthrough be enough? Obviously with the old school hardcore games like Nethack even a single successful run takes a Herculean effort, but a lot of the more modern ones are breezier and more forgiving.

Yes, one playthrough is enough.

Brandish (snes)
Replayed this for the first time in roughly 15 years, great game once you get used to the disorientation from the viewpoint (overhead but always facing forward) it feels like a first person dungeon crawler only played from a top down view. Great music also. Only low point for me is the final boss where the game chugs a bit.

Wow, pretty impressive! Always meant to try that one, but like you said, the viewpoint is very confusing.

The Deer God (Switch) This is a sort of adventure-platformer were you play as a deer, and very likely to be the worst game I play this year. It isn't as aggressively terrible as Oceanhorn, but it's mainly boring and also buggy with terrible boss battles. You mostly run and jump exclusively to the right and complete simple "quests" and easy puzzles. There's three bosses none of which are interesting. The first has very finicky hit detection, the second is insanely easy and the third wouldn't be too bad if it weren't constantly respawning probably due to a big. This pretty much has no redeeming qualities.
Total time was was about 2.5 hours. One game day seems to pass every 3 minutes. I finished in 50 days and 2.5h sounds about right.
Total: 5 Letters: -DC-K-O- Time: 16.5h + 0:45:30

I'm going to clarify that a bit and state that any roguelike where the unlocks are just alternates rather than upgrades, or the unlocks can be (and are) ignored, should count regardless of the state of your save at the beginning of the year. For example, FTL should always count regardless of which ship you start with. Spelunky should always count if you start your run from the Mine entrance. If you want to use shortcuts in Spelunky, you need to unlock them this year.

You're really going to keep beating that dead horse, aren't you.

Initially I was super put off by the turning camera thing and wasn't really a dungeon crawler fan at the time, but once I gave it a chance I quickly got used to its particularities and got really into it. I'd never really played an hardcore game like that. Another thing is you can strafe, so you don't need to turn that much.

BioShock (PC)
Specifically, I played the Remastered version, but it's basically identical to the original version gameplay-wise, so it doesn't count as a separate game.

Need to get around to the Lennus games, too. And Feda: Emblem of Justice.

FEDA is just like Shining Force with a more serious tone, but be warned that the fan translation took some undue liberties in spots, so don't be surprised if you run across a jarring, out-of-place speech about the evils of pacifism and neutrality in times of war, the editor was just mad at France for refusing to join the Irak war and thought we should know. Most of the game is fine. Paladin's Quest (Lennus) tends to be very polarizing, I like it a lot but some people can't stand its visuals.

Oh Jesus. I hate when people screw up a translation like that. Thanks for the warning!
