See, if your character has remaining time units at the end of a turn, you can set them to "snap shot" (I think that's the term) so they'll automatically attack if they see an enemy, regardless of whether it's your turn or not.
The typical term used for this is "overwatch." Snap Shot is the standard firing method (as opposed to Aimed Shot and Auto Shot).
If you didn't remember, you see the one green and three red icons on the lower left part of the HUD? Each one represents a type of shot. If you click one, it will restrict the number of time points required to fire that shot from being used during your turn. So you can click the lower right one, then act until you can't anymore and still have enough time points reserved to do an Auto Shot during the opponent's turn.
Whatever you do, lose your standard rifles and pistols immediately. You want laser weaponry as soon as possible.
Also even when you're done with them, keep a Heavy Laser or two in your base stock. One of the tougher enemies encountered later on, the Sectopod, is very vulnerable to said weapon. If your stats are high you can down a Sectopod with a single Heavy Laser shot. This is very handy since they fight alongside Ethereals, which are the most overall difficult of the aliens to deal with.
That's also something a lot of people don't remember, the alien species are ALWAYS encountered in set pairs.
Sectoids and Cyberdiscs appear on the same map. As do Ethereals and Sectopods. Snakemen fight alongside Chrysalids, etc.
NEVER walk right through a door like that (especially a UFO one). Instead, have a guy on each side of the doorway, angled towards the door itself. You then want a third covering them in case any aliens already evacuated the ship and are lurking around behind it. I have one of the two guys at the doorway throw a grenade in to flush them out.
You might want to invest in a tank too this early on, it's great for peaking around corners. Your if you want to beat the game, you have to understand that your soldiers aren't nearly as expendable as you'd like to think. You're going to go through a ton over the course of the game but the only ones that will stand a chance at the later base raids and the final mission will be the ones who were with you since almost the beginning and have their stats sufficiently increased.
The general strategy is that you want to be doing most of your damage while on overwatch. You want to position yourself so that you are covered and the enemy is coming to you. The majority of action you take while it's "your turn" should be based around positioning and preparation, with the actual killing happening during the opponents' turn. This goes for pretty much every game of this kind.
Also check this out, if you have a Proximity Grenade, throw it without priming it. Sometimes it takes them a full turn or two to realize it's not primed so they'll take the long way around it. Sometimes they never catch on. ;D
