So currently I own two Bomberman games: Super Bomberman on the SNES, and Bomberman on Turbo CD (via the Gate of Thunder/Bonk 1+2 disc. And no, its not for sale, YOU CAN'T HAVE IT).
Oh, I also have Wario Blast on Gameboy. I keep forgetting about that one.
While I like both games, I'm kinda wondering what point there is to having multiple Bomberman games overall.
Like, there is one situation that seems appropriate: when you have multiple consoles. One Bomberman per console seems awesome.
But I've been wondering:
Are the multiplayer modes significantly different between the various incarnations of the Bomberman series? Like for example, if I own Super Bomberman and love blowing up my friends (not a terrorist honest) is there any reason to get Super Bomberman 2, 3, 4 or 5? And I keep hearing that Bomberman '94 and Saturn Bomberman are the best games in the franchise, but what do they do that is all that different?
I'm just curious, as I'm probably gonna wind up with more Bomberman anyway someday, but I'd like to know this stuff because just from glances at the single player mode I haven't seen huge differences.
Thanks in advance.

On the SNES games at least, there are different multiplayer modes. SB1 allows up to four players (might I remind you that presumably an adult wrote this for GamePro: "someone should giftwrap a bomb and mail it to Hudson Soft" for leaving out the fifth player. That seems like something that, if I were an adult in 1993, I might have still found tasteless) But anyways, SB2 (the last to get a NA release) added the fifth player, and as well had bigger mazes and I think different level goals (like destroying targets instead of all enemies). 3 added kangaroo partners which I'm sure gave some extra abilities. I'm not sure which features were in which games but later games added features like a team mode, an option to allow defeated players to still participate by throwing bombs from the sidelines (was that the "sudden death" feature? Different from the existing feature which shrinks the field for the last minute).
I do remember Bomberman Party Edition for the PS1 had a battle mode on par with the last SNES Bombermans (but you may not want that game for singleplayer, as it's basically NES Bomberman 1 updated. Graphics/sound/rumble/memory card save.)

Same answer as Kingmike.
Newer maps, skills, abilities and scenarios, and even wonderful music. Get animals to ride, like Kangaroos are a cool plus.
There's also Bomberman 64, where the bombs and explosions are not like the standard 2-D/4-way blast.

Bomberman is one of those games where I build up my guy and immediately lose interest once I lose a life and have to rebuild my powerups. Same thing with Gradius.

And I keep hearing that Bomberman '94 and Saturn Bomberman are the best games in the franchise, but what do they do that is all that different? Saturn Bomberman goes right up to ten players. And you get to select from a bunch of wacky different Hudson characters, too. Not sure what the particular appeal of Bomberman '94 would be.

Well, I have Mega Bomberman now (which I've heard is the same as Bomberman '94). I like the kangaroos and the single-player seems nothing like the other Bombermans I've played.
I used to own the original NES Bomberman, but that game is kinda worthless.
Also, as that guy who actually cares about video game storylines, its always made me laugh how Bomberman's canon is practically nonexistant. One game Black Bomberman is the arch-enemy, next game he's always been your best friend and the enemy is some scientists.
Kay, so... which Bomberman games would you most recommend?
Currently I only own Bomberman TG16, Super Bomberman 1, and Mega Bomberman... so one game for each 16-bit console. I own no others. EDIT: And Wario Blast. God I keep forgetting that one.

I don't remember how bad the checkpoints (are there any real ones?) in Bomberman are, but with Gradius, the arcade version felt easier than the NES version at because it has less checkpoints and thus gives you the opportunity to get your power-ups back.

I recall Super Bomberman on SNES allowed you to immediately respawn when you lost a life, but you respawn without the power-ups. I think in others you restart the level when you die.
Though SB is also the only one I'm recalling which allowed you to play "story" mode as a co-op game (though you divide the lives when 2P joins). I think the Switch game also had that option, but I have only played alone.
There's also Pocket Bomberman for GB/GBC, if you want to experience the oddness of a side-view Bomberman (but otherwise plays the same as the top-down games). (it was originally a monochrome game in Japan, but I think it was internationally released as a GBC launch game)

There was a game mode where Bomberman would jump forever in extra tall levels too.

The NES Bombmerman is of course the one that ends with Bomberman turning into Lode Runner.

I think the Switch game also had that option, but I have only played alone. Fun thing I found by accident as a kid regarding Super Bomberman: Bomb the exit on 1-2. This'll cause an ice cream pickup to appear which immediately gives you five lives. I need to go through one day and see if there's a secret like that on any other level.... ... So I just watched this video called "History of Bomberman," one of those vids showing clips of every released Bomberman game... ... I could swear it showed several RPGs including at least one that was similar to Zelda, but with Bomberman mechanics. Like, okay, there's an idea I never thought would happen (though actually I would almost like a real Bomberman RPG, like Super Mario RPG but with Bomberman).

Sure, there are quite a number of different Bomberman games which derivate from the original formula, e.g. Bomberman Kart, Bomberman Quest etc. It's kinda similar to Mega Man I guess.

There was Panic Bomber as well. I know AVGN complained "why the **** is it on Virtual Boy? It should be on Game Boy!" Well, Panic Bomber felt like each of its original releases was a bit overpowered. It was on NeoGeo, on the PC-Engine it was on CD, on the Super Famicom it needed the SA-1 enhancement chip (my only guess why has something to do with it having a four-player AI mode, which is rather unusual especially for its era. Maybe 4P AI is rather taxing on the CPU. I know the even Nintendo Puzzle Collection on GameCube can seem to barely handle the multi-player Vs. CPU modes it has)

Wasn't there actually a release of Panic Bomber on the Gameboy as well?
