I have a silly question for the rules: if you have a game that you've previously finished while abusing savestates, but you finish it legit this year, does it count as a replay or a "first time" play? I mean, you've seen the ending before, but you probably didn't spend the time to actually get good/learn the game, so the legit run will probably take a number of attempts anyways. Thoughts?

Replay if you finished.

OKAGE: Shadow King (PS2, first time playthrough) - 50 hours, 9 minutes
I loved the story, characters, and dialogue here so much. This is one of the most unique games I have ever played. The gameplay is definitely clunky and flawed but not enough so to take away from that completely. Enemies dealt heavy amounts of damage sometimes even with level grinding and when you throw in quirks like attack targeting among other things it could get pretty rough. Things came to a head with a labyrinthine final dungeon with multiple keys and constantly spawning random encounters. I was glad to be finished.
Worth a look if you like unique games story wise, there's a really nice experience here under some of the messiness.

The Adventures of Bertram Fiddle Episode 1: A Dreadly Business (Switch, Replay) The Adventures of Bertram Fiddle Episode 2: A Bleaker Predicklement (Switch, First Time)
Episode 1 finds low ranking and semi-unemployed adventurer Bertram Fiddle along with his assistant Gavin trying to drum up some adventuring. His wife has found him a sales job at Dulworth's Adequate Soap which he very much would like to avoid. Instead, he ends up on the trail of a villain haunting London, Geoff the Murderer! Obviously this is supposed to be a comedy adventure game, and it's somewhat successful on that front. It is funny and features some references to Victorian literature; Sherlock Holmes is your "rival". It's mainly too short and too easy although the visual design and animation is nice.
Episode 2 finds Bertram working for Mr. Dulworth since tracking down a murderer who seems to have disappeared is not a profitable adventure. However, the trail gets hot again but lands Bertram in jail for a crime he didn't commit. Busting him out of jail as Gavin is probably the highlight of the whole game but also only the second of six chapters which is somewhat of an issue. The game is much longer than the first—HLTB has a single listing of 9h which is way too long versus 1.5h for EP1 which is about right—but has a more meandering story. Chapter five in particular is a complete digression and a poorly designed one. Overall, I did like it, but the overarching story is what disappoints. The individual sections are fine, but there's a lack of focus. It is funnier though and there's some nice use of returning characters.
Both of these are the product of a British animation studio that seems to have made them in between other work. It'd be nice to see an Episode 3 that's more of a full length game and with more full time dedicated to it.
Rating for both: 7

Wolfenstein 2: The New Collossus - PS4
7/10 I’ll try to get the time later, at work now.
I really liked this game, but it lost a few points for how anti-climatic the end was. Probably would have ranked it better the The New Order if it finished as strong as that one did. The story was actually pretty good with interesting set pieces. And while it was fun to to try to sneak through some levels and snipe and CQC kill enemy after enemy, the easier way running through, guns blazing, really is the way to go. But it was just too much of a screeching halt at the ended to score it an 8 or 9.

Xeodrifter (Switch, Replay) How many copies of Xeodrifter is too many? Apparently the answer is 3 because it really irritated me this time around unlike on 3DS or Wii U. The 3DS version is still the best one because while it doesn't use 3D for that much, it does add to the proceedings. The Switch version adds some HD rumble which is okay but isn't game changing. Even for $2 on sale, I kinda regret picking it up again. There's an absolute glut of Metroidvanias these days which wasn't totally the case when this originally came out 4 years ago, and it doesn't hold up all that well.

WarioWare Gold (3DS, first time playthrough) - 2 hours, 17 minutes
It was great to play a WarioWare game again (I haven't since Smooth Moves) but this was really lacking in content. My 2 hours, 17 minutes playtime was not only the full story (saw the credits) but also some messing around with the challenge modes. I will spend more time with this for sure (I'll definitely make sure to try each challenge mode) but I can't help but wish there was more meat to the story mode since I'm not one for chasing high scores.
Also not huge on the gyro mini-games. The 3DS XL is a bit bulky/uncomfortable to try to turn quickly with how fast paced the mini-games are. Especially in the levels/modes that mix up the mini-game types. Going into a gyro mini-game from a touch screen game for example can be a bit annoying.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (replay, PS4 Nathan Drake collection)
I decided to go back to the beginning after playing Uncharted 4, I hadn't played Uncharted 1 in over a decade and I was curious.
Unfortunately I remember being a bit disappointed in the game back when I first played it and that still stands true today, it really feels like little more than a dry run, lacking all the flash and flair the series become known for starting with 2, there's not as much climbing or platforming as the other games and only a a few easy puzzles, most of your time is spent with the very generic shooting mechanics that can be at times but really starts to get dull and repetitive as the game goes on (to be fair, that style of third person shooting was fresher in 2007, but 2007 was a long time ago)
Plus the story takes a pretty dumb twist that I've never liked and is not even remotely explained.
But thankfully the game is short, knowing not to wear out it's welcome and it certainly has its moments and an overall charm, but like I said it's basically just a dry run and 2 is really when things kicked into high gear.

Mega Blast (arcade, emulated on Windows) - approx. 25 minutes, plus all the retries first time played
Barely managed to play by the rules, I managed to beat the first 5 stages of 8 with a single credit and then completed it in 13 or 14 credits because the difficulty ramps up a lot near the end, especially if you lose the weapons and especially with the final boss whose projectiles I couldn't seem to avoid.
One of Taito's worst games: mediocre graphics and gameplay, ugly enemy design, bad music (including a terrible rendition of "Ode To Joy" on the ending credits and something that could have been the "Moonlight Sonata"), nonsensical and useless story, unbalanced difficulty... The only amusing things are the cool logo and the cameos of other Taito characters as sub-bosses including Arkanoid's Doh, Chack'n and the Raimais bike, but I don't think they were too happy to star in this shitfest. Oh and this is how it ends:
Yeah, screw you.

Metro 2033 Redux (Xbox One, replay) - 14 hours, 45 minutes
Replayed this for Microsoft Rewards points and to get ready for Exodus. Not quite as good as I remembered but still really solid. Absolutely love the setting and world building on display here. The combat is iffy but thankfully you can stealth a lot of the areas and the parts where you can't aren't too prevalent.
Going to eventually play the original 2033 on PC as that seems to have completely different lighting and some levels are different.

Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes (Switch, First Time) The forum ate my post, but the short version is that while there are some good parts, the core gameplay is really boring and tedious. Levels 2 through 4 aren't too bad, but 1,6,7 are an absolutely slog while 5 is short to the point it doesn't really even count.
I really regret getting this particularly since I got it bundled with the DLC 😕 Reviews have been all over the place for a reason, and it isn't because it's an "interesting" game in a way that's divise.
