While it was overall a huge improvement over its predecessor, Solid Snake moves choppier in Metal Gear 2 on the MSX2 than in Metal Gear 1 on the same Home Computer.

And speaking of Mega Man, how about the X games: Aren't X5 and X6 both considered worse looking than X4? (can't speak from much experience, bacause I haven't really played those yet, just seen some videos). X6 might even look worse than the SNES games - would any of you agree?
X4 is the flashiest looking one of the 3, but I think it's at the expense of the gameplay. X6 looks fine and gets a lot of completely unnecessary hate for being past the point where Inafune wanted to end the series; considering MN9 vs. MM11, maybe there needs to be a rethinking of where the good ideas were actually coming from. X6 isn't perfect, but the graphics are not an issue.

It just seems to me that it has the least consistent artstyle with a stronger emphasis on prerendered objects, which tend to stand out next to the handrawn pixel art.

Was X5 or X6 the point where even the game director didn't want to make any more of them but Capcom said "no, you're doing it!" because that would certainly factor in to the quality of output.

^ X5 was the intended ending. X6 also came out in 2001, at that point I've seen such late release games get critisized simply for not being a PS2 game. X6 probably was a budget title to begin with I have not played it yet. All I remember is how much people hated the level design not so much the graphics. Xenoblade 2 compared to the two prior games, thanks to the change in character design, looks like a generic tiddy anime game at first glance now. Technical side it looks impressive next to X still but the image quality in handheld mode is way worse than the original on Wii. I really ought to play this game docked sometime.

I didn't think XC2 was too bad undocked.1 on a CRT looks better than it does on an HDTV because of the analog fuzziness, but it definitely does not look better than 2 portable and is at a lower resolution. That XC2 generally runs at a subnative resolution can be a little iffy sometimes, but it's really pushing the hardware. I'm playing Ys VIII right now which also uses a floating resolution that's much more variable in quality in both the visual aesthetics and how frequently it changes which can be every few seconds.

I have to admit I haven't played the original since Wii days. I mean it still looks nice if only because the game itself looks great but it is one of the worse looking handheld mode games in image quality I own currently for what's its worth. I still play it handheld mode is not only how much easier for me to complete its exploration and downtime but also it looks nostalgic to me? Like the way this game downscaled it reminds me of a PSP game with dithering and background blur. Hard to explain.
I plan on getting YS VIII on Switch because PS4 version is rare physically.

Xenosaga Ep 2 looks worse than Ep 1 in almost every aspect aside from the maps. Models have less polygons, blockhands and blob shadows are everywhere. Oftentimes in the same scenes with proper ones. The changed charadesigns look pretty jarring, especially when you consider that everyone besides Shion, KOS-MOS and chaos looks almost identical to Ep 1, aside from blockier hands. Also at least my PAL version had a horrible framerate and stuttering in every cutscene. Also Mega Man 9 and 10 look much worse than MM8. Almost like a two-generation step back... ...

Metroid Prime > Metroid Prime 2
While the sequel slightly improves upon the original in some regards (like texture resolution) it also adds the depressingly monotonous black and purple Dark Aether where every region just looks the same.

Metroid and Metroid 2:Return of Samus. Cheater. I can do it again. =) Dragon Quest VIII to Dragon Quest IX. Arguably, I would say Super C to Contra Force.

I can do it again. =) Arguably, I would say Super C to Contra Force. Let's do this: Chrono Trigger > Chrono Cross Urban Strike > Soviet Strike Contra comparison briefly crossed my mind, but the bosses in CF have been granted a bit higher sprites count, resulting in more luxurious movement flexibility. Aesthetically the environments lack a bit, but technically, they're just about in pair with.

Wind Waker > Twilight Princess Nidhogg > Nidhogg 2 Super Mario Bros. 3 > Super Mario World
Spelunky > Spelunky 2, but that's still in development, so that doesn't really count.
