Wind Waker > Twilight Princess Nidhogg > Nidhogg 2 Nidhogg 2 might be the "Indie-Windwaker" when it comes to artstyle
I've actually only played the first game, which had a pretty bold look. But judging from videos, I have to say that completely reworking the style and and risking potentially alienating fans of the original is even bolder. They managed to create visuals that may look cheap and dumb at first glance, but in fact are masterfully done. I think they managed to give the second game an even more distinct personality than what the first one had.

Mega Man 8 > Mega Man 9
This is one of few examples where it was done on purpose though. They wanted MM9 to look like a much older game, unlike most other games mentioned in this thread.

Mega Man Legends 1&2 > Mega Man 11
It has a half dimension less of graphics - wtf Capcom!?
Edit: If we've learned something from this thread it's that Mega Man games *always* look worse than their predecessors.

A whole 'nother category of examples could be made for remakes that look worse that the originals. I just watched some gameplay from Gods Remastered and that one certainly qualifies (though you can play with the original graphics at least). Nidhogg 2 might be the "Indie-Windwaker" when it comes to artstyle I've actually only played the first game, which had a pretty bold look. It certainly looks unique, but I still think it's quite ugly. Just the way the characters' sprites look and rotate is visually not very pleasing to me, and the whole game looks kind of busy. Nidhogg 1 was already a very unique looking game, but without going over the top with it and it looked very clean.

I thought the art direction was different than the first one but looking at videos on YouTube, it pretty much looks the same. I'm going to edit my original post.

Aren't the Batman games created by different companies? So they're not really sequels to each other. (I think "Batman: The Video Game" and Return/Revenge of the Joker were both created by Sunsoft. Though the beta of the canceled SNES port of RotJ was looking pretty shitty compared to the NES original.)

"Streets of Rage 2 > Streets of Rage 3, overall"
I love the fluidity of the animation in SoR3 and it handles background-"perspective" better than SoR2 (the beach in the latter is iconic, but it also looks weird) so I beg to differ.
"Shinobi 3 > Shinobi X & Shinobi 3DS - Shinobi " Shinobi 3 > everything else
"Turtles in Time > The GBA ones, art style-wise" When it comes to the Konami GBA games: certainly, though these are so different gameplay-wise, they hardly count as sequels to me. The Ubisoft title comes pretty close with its excellent sprites, but the soso backgrounds ultimately make me agree with you.

As I remember it, the second looks a lot like the first, with nicer sprites. What makes it worse-looking? And yeah, those Batman games aren't really sequels since they're all just different adaptations by different companies.

The "Joker" Mega Drive game also looks substantially worse than the NES original (and naturally worse than the previous movie-based game for the Mega Drive).

And yeah, those Batman games aren't really sequels since they're all just different adaptations by different companies. I preferred how sprites and backgrounds were drawn and shaded in P&R1 with a bit higher contrast and more "solid" and consistent shapes, as well as most of the boss designs and the overall palette choices. Backgrounds are a bit more varied and detailed in 1, less flat looking. Some effects like the pixelated explosions and some NPCs look rushed in 2, and most cutscenes use in-game graphics. But 2 still looks very good as well.
