I love music, and one area of music that fascinates me to no end are covers and rearrangements of songs. Whether they adhere closely to the original, change a few things, or reinterpret it in a completely different genre or style, I'm endlessly curious about listening to new versions that offer their own take of a well-known song.
So I thought I'd start a thread where we can talk about covers of songs, what about them interests us, and how it stacks up against the original.

Year 3000 by the Jonas Brothers (original by Busted)
I think it says something about my general ignorance that despite remembering Year 3000 quite well over the years, I never knew there was a cover by the Jonas Brothers that's likely way more well known than the original (if sales numbers and YouTube's suggestions going for them before Busted are anything to go by). I only found about it this morning because I was looking up info about the song, and I got so curious that I decided to have a quick listen.
I don't really know what most folks think of the Jonas Brothers (I half suspect they might have had a hatedom back in the day, as most teen pop bands with a gig on the Disney Channel seemed to have iirc), but I gotta admit - I quite like this version. While I find the vocals a little too nasally for me, the overall arrangement and instrumentation is pretty banging. Thankfully, an official instrumental version of this cover exists, and it's really damn good!
In some ways, I think I might actually prefer it to the original version, even though that version is much more fun to sing along to.
I reckon a mashup of the instrumental with isolated vocals from Busted would probably make for the best of both worlds. Maybe I'll see if I can do something about that...

Come Together by Spiralmouth (original by The Beatles)
The Beatles have been on my mind at the moment, since my music class is doing a Beatles cover concert in a couple of months, so they've been doing plenty of Beatles songs. One of these is Come Together, which is pretty alright, though I much prefer this acapella cover by Spiralmouth - a short-lived, but excellent group who only one banging album and the superb soundtrack to Crash Twinsanity (and a good bit of Crash Tag Team Racing's music).
It's much slower; even a bit creepy at times with the deep vocals for the instruments, the hard kicks/snares, and the filtered vocals during the verse sections; but I think that's why I like it so much. It creates this very particularly, almost hallucinatory mood that leaves a much greater impact on me than the original. I also just adore the main vocalist's voice, so that might have a hand in it. Other great touches include the chord progression and overall feel of the chorus, and the change to a 3/4 time signature for a brand new interlude after the second chorus. The original version's fine for what it is, but I'd likely forget about it after listening to it if it weren't for its general ubiquity owing to being a Beatles song. I first listened to this 5/6 years ago, and it's still as fresh and impactful as it was back then.
