Super Mario Bros. Luigi's last name is not Mario, so why is it "Mario Bros."? this was explained in the movie (which was great btw)

That was certainly not official canon, though I hear Miyamoto had a good laugh about it when he heard. I was just thinking about Super Mario Land 2: when did Wario get the power to put spells on the monsters in Mario Land? I assume the dark clouds above Mario Castle are some sort of evil doing, but didn't he later mostly just like fart and make cheap video games? Don't know if they really had Wario's character in mind much or if he was going to be another throwaway villain. I mean, does anyone remember Tatanga? (who I thought sounded like a pro wrestler) Apparently the Link's Awakening translator didn't recognize Wart when he cameo'd in that game. I get a feeling Daisy would've been a forgotten character if not for that in the party and sports games, they had to look through the back catalog to find some roster-filling characters (or make them, like Waluigi).

How about the alien boss at the end of super Mario land? He never resurfaced.

You mean Tatanga? He was allowed to be the boss of Super Mario Land 2's Space Zone.

He's also a spirit in Smash Ultimate. But who isn't.

The plot of Mario Land 1 is just a distraction that Wario had Tatanga create so that Wario could take over Mario's castle. So retroactively Tatanga was made into just a minion of Wario. Maybe that explains partially why he hasn't appeared in a long time, since Wario is now more a character defined by greed and adventure than just plain being a bad guy.
Daisy was brought back apparentely because they wanted more human characters in Mario Tennis (since they're easier to adapt for Tennis). I thought for the longest time they brought her back to have a doubles partner for Peach in Mario Tennis, but she isn't even Peach's doubles partner.
So at least there's reason she got reintroduced into the series, but I still think Tatanga and Wart are long overdue a reappearance. Certainly they were more memorable than Daisy was in Mario Land.

"Mario" is actually also an Italian surname, albeit a very uncommon one mostly found in the Venetian area and in the South. It's overwhelmingly more popular as a first name though. FYI there was a starlet and dancer named Lorenza Mario. Also some time ago there was in the news the sad story of a girl who OD'd and died, whose name was Alice Bros. Her father's name is Mario, so he was quite literally Mario Bros.
kingmike: For Tatanga, maybe it reminds you of a wrestler because of Tatanka.

Get outta here! Next you'll tell me Carlos "Charlie" Blanka is not a thing.. I heard Capcom has adopted "Ken Masters" as his full name canon. (it was a name Hasbro came up with for the SFII character when they launched the first toy line in the US, to distinguish it from the Barbie character)

And I've heard they almost went with "Ken Masters.. of the Universe".
