So I ordered the US release of Chulip the other day. I had the Japanese version and enjoyed what I played of it but would always rather play games in my native language.
It is getting torn to shreds in the reviews so far. I've read that the game is a CD and loads constantly, but from what I remember of the Japanese version it was a DVD and loading was not an issue at all. Has anyone else played the JPN version? If so, is it a DVD or a CD?
Anyway, if you enjoy the old Sierra Quest games, kinks and all, you will probably like Chulip. Much like the earlier King's Quest games you're given little direction and have to explore and try to solve the game at your own pace. There's also plenty of random death to be found, again much like the old King's Quest games. It's sort of silly and strange, but also a little dark and disturbing.

That sounds really amusing. I wish Natsume had kept with their plan of selling this at $15. At $30, it seems a bit steep for a novelty game.

Well, the point of the game is to explore and solve problems for people so that they kiss you and you gain hearts. But there are also plenty of things that hurt you. So on the one hand you have to explore and look in every corner, but sometimes merely looking in a trashcan can hurt you. Sometimes you'll find something good, sometimes you'll get hurt.
From what I played it's bizarre but has some darkness to it. Most of the people you are trying to help have grown so disconnected from society that they have literally withdrawn into cracks in the ground.
There's a lot more to it than "it's bizarre." It's like a cross between King's Quest and Panic! Reviews are painting it as a quaint bizarre Japanese novelty game, but I think there's a lot more to it than that, especially if you really enjoyed the classic Sierra adventure games.

Literally? That is really bizarre.

Yeah, there are cracks in the ground and there are people living in them and you have to spy on them in order to figure out how to get them out of there so you can kiss them!

My review of it: www.rpgfan.com/reviews/chulip/index.htmlIt's a lot more than a novelty game. It's really freakin' outstanding, in fact! (Though I will admit, I do prefer Chibi-Robo on the GameCube, but only by a very small amount.) -Tom

This is one of those cases where the Japanese version has much better cover artwork: Hey Tom, is the Japanese version on CD or DVD? I could've sworn it was a DVD, but people are stating that the US version is a CD.

I *love* the Japanese version box art. Not only do I think it's better than the American version, I think it's some of the BEST box art I have EVER seen. The amount of detail in that picture is just astounding... it's just so very pretty!! (:
As for whether or not the original game was CD-based, I'm actually pretty sure it WAS... though I can't seem to find my Japanese version of it (I think I lent it to an import gamer friend of mine quite some time ago, and just forgot about it until now), so I can't say for certain.

OK, I just called up my friend and had him check, and the Japanese version was indeed a CD-ROM game. Natsume did not change that.

Well, I finally had a chance to check out the English version, which I was wary of due to all the poor reviews the game is getting... but fortunately, the reviews turned out to be crap, as the English version is SURPRISINGLY good! The translation is kinda sloppy/awkward, but it's in no way BAD, and the fact that it's kind of awkward actually ADDS to the game's bizarreness, rather than detracting from it! And the things that should be left in their original forms (like the weird chewed-up voice snippets, and the little thank-yous from your kissees) were left alone entirely.
It's a slow-moving game, and it's REALLY FREAKING HARD (seriously, you are going to die A LOT in this game!), but if you're a fan of old Sierra adventure titles, and you also have a soft spot for HIGHLY DISTURBING JAPANESE WEIRDNESS, I can't imagine you won't absolutely love this game. It really is something special. (:

I really got to see that thing about people living in cracks. That has to be so weird.

Update: Natsume DID make one edit, though it's not a surprising one. Basically, they gave the main character some underwear. (: In the original Japanese version, there was actually... well... prepubescent wang, to put it bluntly. It kinda fit, since the game is really freakin' sick and twisted to begin with... but yeah... he's in his undies in the American version. Makes some sense, as I don't think Natsume would've quite been able to pull off a Teen rating on a game that featured a naked 12-year-old running around and kissing people. (:

I wonder whether this will get a PAL release..I'll buy it if you do NATSUME. Though I totally understand the underwear thing and to be honest it wouldn't ruin the enjoyment for me I can see a game with a nude pre-pubecsent boy kissing people not going down well with the rating boards...as I've said before Japan is insane.
