I'm sure you all know the Castlevania games, ones like Portrait of Ruin Also there's a game called Shaman King: Master of Spirits and they released a second one as well Shaman King pretty much has almost the exact same type of gameplay as the GBA/DS Castlevania games. I really like these games and was wondering if anyone had any games they knew that were similar to them, obscure or well known, it doesn't really matter. Thanks

Shaman King: Master of Spirits 1 & 2 are the same games as Shaman King: Legacy of the Spirits 1 & 2, right? I actually had no idea they played like Metroid/Castlevania. Maybe I'm gonna get the first one and see if I like it. Are they harder than the DS/GBA Castlevanias? Is it longer? etc
EDIT: Seems like Master of Spirits isn't at all the same game as Legacy of the Spirits... uuh, well anyway. Master of Spirits is the game I will be picking up.

Why isn't Vampire Killer there? Wouldn't it be pretty crucial historically in this presentation?

A bit older, but Faxanadu is really nice.

I've recommended this to Metroidvania fans in the past, but I feel obligated to do it again every time this topic comes up, merely because it's such a perfect fit:
Xanadu Next. Falcom's slightly less well-known PC masterpiece.
The only thing about it that's NOT Metroidvania is the perspective, since the game is 3D instead of 2D. But IMHO, it's the single most well-made 3D Metroidvania game EVER. The atmosphere, the music, the crazy secrets, the amazing way the world map fits together... it's sheer brilliance!
It qualifies slightly less, but Ys: The Oath In Felghana is also kind of a Metroidvania game. In many ways, it's a better game than Xanadu Next - but it's also slightly less Metroidvania, in that it's very specifically split into individual areas that have no real connection with one another. One of the key ingredients for a successful Metroidvania game is having one single contiguous game world that interconnects each of its areas in clever ways - something OiF arguably has, but it's not really the focus, nor is it quite as pronounced or interconnected as the game world of Xanadu Next.
Going back a ways, one NES game that rarely gets mentioned is Solstice, but I would argue that Solstice fits the bill - and may, in fact, be one of the *FIRST EVER* 3D Metroidvania titles... and to this day, it is my favorite NES game of all time.

MSX's "Batman" is also either based or a direct clone of this game too.
