www.hardcoregaming101.net/legendofkage/legendofkage.htmBelieve or not, I actually hadn't played The Legend of Kage until last week. I got the new DS sequel and rather liked it, so I went back and played the arcade original. I'd heard so many bad things about it, but I think it's actually pretty damn cool for an arcade game from 1985. As the article states, there's a certain cinematic feel to it that really feels ahead of its time. I think a lot of people judge harshly based on the NES port, when it's really meant to be an arcade experience, especially seeing how you can beat the first loop in less than five minutes. I didn't realize that Demon/Fudou Myououden were such completely different games too. Kinda cool. I definitely hope The Legend of Kage 2 comes out here. The level designs feel a bit too loose and repetitive, but the game feels so nice that it's hard to complain, and it eliminates all of the frustration of the original. I think the series has a bad name over here though, so I dunno how it'll pan out.

"Furthermore, the original arcade game featured a butter during the boss fights."
Butter?

Like a lot of articles that mention specific details (the butterfly) I know I'd really liked to have seen a shot of the butterfly

I'll try and put one up. To be honest, it's kind of small and insignificant in screenshots.

Ah, The Legend of Kage, the jumpy ninja game that I can't understand why everyone doesn't like (fuck seanbaby).
Yeah, I gotta agree, the sequel is pretty cool- I expected to blaze though it like I did the original, but damn was I wrong. Before I got my DS stolen, I think I was up to level 4, with the waterfall and shit. Also that system where you can combine those spheres to make new spec. attacks was awesome.

Nice article.
I didn't realise that it had a bad name in the USA (or anywhere for that matter). I can't understand why. I loved the NES version (and conversely, did not like the arcade version, at all). I regularly used to clock the NES game, and got quite good at working out where the power ups would appear in some stages (still not sure how to trigger them).
I always found it sad that this poor ninja basically spends an entire year repeatedly rescuing a blind princess who keeps getting kidnapped (if you notice, the seasons change as you play the game).
I vagually remember a message when you clock it the first time, all the seasons, on the NES, where it says something like "Finish the game again to properly finish it" or something. But I'd usually be bored by then and switch off. Anything happen if you finish it twice in a row?

The other half is, compared to other NES games from a few years later like Castlevania and Contra, it's really quite short. But taken in its context, it's actually pretty good.

The game has a TERRIBLE name in the US because rommers have no perspective. The NES port isn't terrible at all, and the arcade game is extremely fun and addictive. It's great to see this game getting mentioned on the site.

I hate to sound like a downer, but I don't think the first game is that good.
Now I never heard of it back when, and I only heard of it in passing on the Internet after that. Still I never heard any real specifics, so when I saw it was on the Taito Legends collection I decided to give it a try.
For the first few levels it was pretty fun, and I was impressed by the semi-cinematic presentation. By either the second or third level though, the difficulty level killed the fun and I ended up quiting.
I also find it hard to take the game too seriously when pressing the attack button causes your character's arm to spin like a pinwheel.

For Kage 2 it first says that it has 12 stages, then 10, so either one's probably wrong. Also the first Kage is missing most systems in the systems list and while you're already at it, you might want to add the VC release this time, since the list needs to be updated anyway. The paragraph about Kage 2 hopefully coming to the West should be altered to reflect the releases both in Europe and NA.

It has a pretty good localization too, as those go.
