Since the "Cartoons that made you cry" thread was fairly active, let's say the cartoons that scared you. Doesn't matter if you were a kid when it scared you, just say what it was. Remember, no anime, and it's best to try to stay clear of cartoon movies since they're pretty much all remakes of old stories. But if it's a movie based on a show like the Hey Arnold Movie, that's okay. Specials are okay too.
The Powerpuff Girls
While I can't be specific to certain episodes, The Powerpuff Girls had a lot of scary stuff in it. A lot of it still freaks me out. I still consider it to not be a show for kids.
Garfield's Halloween Adventure
The Garfield Halloween Special was really scary to me as a kid, but mainly just the parts with the Pirate ghosts. However, during the "Scaredy Cat" song, when Garfield lifts the white bed sheet off a kid and finds that there is nothing under it, it still gives me a shiver to this day.
The Lonesome Ghosts (1937)
This Mickey Mouse Cartoon always scared me as a kid.
Thomas, Percy, and the Dragon
Now keep in mind I was very little, so this is why it scared me. There was an episode of Thomas the Tank Engine in which Thomas had to deliver a Chinese paper craft Dragon for a parade. This episode scared me because the dragon was scary. Though one could argue that this technically isn't a cartoon.
It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown!
The only part in this that scared me (and from what I've heard, every little kid who's watched the special) was during the opening credits, a spooky owl flew towards the screen and hooted in a scary way.
The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror
The cartoon that scared me the most as a kid was the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episode where Bart's evil twin brother was locked in the Attic. (though it turns out that Bart was the evil one all along) The episode scared the pants off of me and I wasn't able to watch it for years! Treehouse of Horror was REALLY scary the first few years, and my mom hated how I watched it and couldn't sleep for weeks. Sadly, the episodes started to be funny rather than scary, so it got stupid. I haven't watched the Simpsons in years since the Treehouse of Horror was what I mainly watched it for, even if I did get terrified. I liked the feeling.

Why can't we list animes here? There's only one cartoon I remember scaring me as a kid and it was an anime series from the 80s (Kimagure Orange Road, with Finnish dub).

The Judge at the end of Who Framed Roger Rabbit scared the shit out of me when I was a kid.

The reason that I say no anime is that when I ask people about cartoons, all the answers are about anime. I watch anime too, but It's not the only kind of cartoon ever created. Nobody ever talks about non anime anymore, so I want to have answers other than anime since we all know the anime that scares people and the ones that make them cry. Besides, anime is naturally sad and/or scary. The Japanese are good at that stuff. It's the non anime answers that are more interesting.
I remember one of the specific episodes of The Powerpuff Girls that scared me, and still really creeps me out. It is the scariest episode of the series. It was the episode called "Knock it Off"
Professor Utonium's old roommate (Professor Dick) visits and sees the Girls as a way to make money. Dick tricks the girls into giving him Chemical X to create his own Powerpuff girls. He doesn't use enough of the ingredients though, and they all come out as hideous mutants that roughly look like the girls. When the original girls come to take back the Chemical X they gave Dick, he drinks it all and turns into a huge monster. Dick drains the Chemical X out of the girls. Just when they are about to die, Professor Utonium tells the Girls that he loves them, and the girls say they they love him too. Professor Dick's Mutant girls turn on Dick because they never received any love. Professor Dick is killed in a fire along with all of the mutant girls. Professor Utonium holds the girls and starts crying, but the love he has for them revives them. Professor Utonium explains that the reason Dick's girls turned out wrong wasn't just the sloppy ingredients, but it was the fact that they had no love.
This episode was really scary and freaky just by how hideous the mutant girls looked. It's a very disturbing episode and it still freaks me out. If you're watching the show with young kids, skip this episode since it's bound to scare them.

The only one I can think of is the episode of the Simpsons where they go to the duff beer theme park.
The sequence after Lisa drinks the beer or whatever from the ride river and starts to trip out...man, that trip out sequence creeped the hell of me for some reason. I dunno why, it just did.

I probably shouldn't admit it, but the Twin Peaks/Invasion of the Body Snatchers episode of Darkwing Duck totally freaked me out when I was little. - HC

I remember one of the last episodes of Reboot, Megabite (I can barely remember the show, so I apologize for any naming errors) has that fight on top of the big tower with Enzo (I think), and a portal to the internet gets opened in the process. He gets grabbed by all these big tentacle things- with the appropriate monster noises- and dragged in.
I always thought that was a little freaky.

Not quite a cartoon, but when I was a youngun one episode of Sesame Street scared the crap out of me. I think Bert and Ernie were in this Egyptian temple/pyramid or something. Just the environment frightened me deeply. Holy smokes here it is: youtube.com/watch?v=9nSmWHHZpVE

If you're watching the show with young kids, skip this episode since it's bound to scare them. Holy crap, I remember that one... and I agree. The failed girl clones were... very disturbing. I should watch that show again if it airs anymore. I'd like to mention that the episode with the zombie magician was incredibly grim. How many "for kids" shows feature magicians being killed by a botched stage trick involving the iron maiden? Funny that the Duff Beer trippy sequence was mentioned. I also have a scary Simpsons moment from the fourth season; the episode where Bart gets a big brother because Homer's being a bad parent. I remember that Bart was so pissed at Homer that he saw him as a horrible demon with his face melting off and his speech incomprehensibly slurred. That one particular bit really gave me the jeeblies like nothing else, even more so than anything from the Treehouse of Horror episodes. Oh, and does anyone remember the Beetlejuice animated series? Naturally, there was a fair host of grim and somewhat disturbing matter, but the episode that got me in particular was the one with Edgar Allen Poe, and Beetlejuice was subject to the many horrors faced in Poe's stories. The image of the Pit and the Pendulum had a massive beating heart floating in darkness above the pit while Beetlejuice was strapped to the bed, screaming in abject horror. While I haven't seen it in ages, this vivid memory just... fucking... creeps me out. Hmm... I'm sure there's a few more, but that's all I got for now. Probably... a few things from Beavis and Butthead which I was somehow allowed to watch when I was young, but... well, let's not go there, eh?

Powerpuff girls I've never really considered a cartoon for kids. There was actually a fair bit of adult humor in it. I also remember being creeped out by this episode of Samurai jack, but I can't remember which one it was.

Okay. I've changed my mind on scariest episode of Powerpuff Girls. I just watched the Episode "Power-noia" and it was terrifying.
The girls encounter some scary things before going to bed for the night, and to make things worse, the Professor had to turn off their nightlight to conserve power. Sensing the girls fear, "Him" decides to torment them via nightmare. Blossom has a nightmare about failing her school test, Buttercup has a nightmare about giant Spiders, and Bubbles has a nightmare where her stuffed toys come to life and try to kill her (or as they say in cartoons, "destroy") Once Blossom discovers that "Him" is behind it all, She enters Buttercup and Bubbles dreams to save them. (their dream connecting power was reveled in the episode with the Sandman) They face their fears and defeat "Him"
This episode scared me shitless. I know I shouldn't swear on forums, but it's the only word to describe it. There was a scene where Bubbles is staring at a cute, yet creepy, big eyed teddy bear in the dark. The only noise that can be heard is the sound of crickets chirping. The screen kept going back and forth from bubbles to the bear in long pauses. Eventually it goes back to the bear, and it slowly makes a scary face.
This was the scariest thing I've seen in a show, EVER! The reason? A long time ago I had a nightmare that played out the EXACT same way. EXACTLY THE SAME! The ONLY difference was that there were no crickets. Deathly silent. And of course it was me instead of bubbles that it kept going back to. That was the worst nightmare I've ever had, and I'm always afraid I'll encounter it again. Seeing my biggest fear in a conscious state play out right in front of me was the scariest thing ever. I even considered shutting my eyes, but I felt that I should watch it. I've never seen that episode before, and I don't think I'll ever watch it again.

The two episodes in the second season of Spider-Man TAS where Spider-Man turned into Man-Spider. That literally scared the shit out of me as a child and I did not want to watch the series for a while.
