Also, question time: Does anyone know what the crap the voices are saying in Nastar? It sounds like "Endu, Cronell" when you insert a credit... and that just doesn't make an iota of sense. I have been wondering the exact same thing since 1990. I don't think I'll be getting an answer any time soon, either. Anyway, it's great to finally see a Rastan article. I know I'm in the minority, but I actually like RS2/Nastar Warrior. That may be more of a nostalgia thing than anything else (it was the first game in the series I ever played) - or not, because I love firing it up on Taito Legends 2.

Hey, Nastar Warrior is like coffee to me. You don't necessarily think it's great, but you drink/play it anyway. Bad analogy, since I know that you utterly loathe coffee, but... well, dammit, I'm running out of consciousness and I should probably go to sleep. >_< NW isn't an abominable game, but it is just so very outdone by its predecessor. I'm not sure any game pumps you with as much energy and testosterone as the original arcade Rastan. It's still a major favorite of mine nowadays... though, that bullshit about blocking continues in the last level is just SO BAD. I'm glad they murdered that trend by the end of the 80's.

I will admit, I do PLAY Rastan Saga II on occasion, but I never enjoy it. I guess a closer analogy would be fast food.
On its own terms, or even as a sequel to Gladiator, I can understand why the game would make some money and get ported. At the same time though it's such a clumsy let down from the artistically focused, sleek structure of the original, which is a true classic in my book. The SMS game does the original justice far more than the official sequel.
Warrior Blade is just awesome. I love its soundtrack too even if like the original game there aren't too many different songs. Each one is catchy and...adventuresome. Really great boss designs too.

Hey fast food is awesome. Until you finish eating it and realize how much crap you ate.

It's true, you can feel that lump of anti-nourishment just sitting there in your stomach. Forever.
Rastan Saga II's voices are so terrible. After the initial credit is entered, when subsequent coins are put in it seems to say "Yes, we do." There's also that stupid evil woman laughter (two different tracks, heh) that play whenever you're about to enter a boss' chamber or when a falling rock trap is sprung.
Since all voices are gone in the PCE version, good luck avoiding those blocks!

Minor nitpick: Zelda II came out the same year as Rastan in Japan.

Nice article. As a kid I always played the game in the arcades. The two things that stood out for me back then were the music and the huge size of the characters. As a kid I wondered why it never came out for the NES. Years later got to play the SMS version and was quite pleased. The SMS version was sort of deceiving for me. At first I found the size of the characters way too small (being used to the arcade version) but after playing it tought the game to be very playable for an SMS title.

I hate to bump a thread from so many pages ago but I think it should be mentioned that alternately you can beat Medusa by simply jumping and striking her in the head. This causes her to disappear(counts as a hit) and re-appear behind you, doing her little downward sword strike(which you can hop to get away from).
The catch? You'll likely run out of time before you kill her(unless you have the two-handed sword, good luck holding onto it after some of those awful jumps). Man what a terribly designed game.
Also the final boss is absolutely pathetic. Get right in front of him and stand there as he swings his swords low. Then when he flashes blue jump and get a few strikes in, then hold up and you'll block the laser cats his left(right) hands fire and kill the ones that run in from the other side(getting a few hits on the boss in the process) It takes forever but at least it's possible to beat him without dying.

The thing I always hated in the first game was the damned bats. Every castle level, I'd just get absolutely MOBBED with the damned things.
