www.hardcoregaming101.net/umihara/umihara.htmUmihara Kawase is a pretty cool cult game that expands upon the concepts of Bionic Commando, and turns it into a full fledged puzzle platform. I only just tried this game for the first time a few weeks ago, and the physics feel a bit too spongy for me - it adds some more depth to it, but I think I prefer BC's tightness. On the other hand, some of the speedruns I've seen for this are crazy. There's a recent PSP port, but it's pretty buggy, and it majorly flopped when it was released in Japan a month or two ago.

The SNES one is pretty loose with the controls. If you feel that way, I *highly* suggest playing the one on the Playstation. You can download the ISO off that Umihara fansite at the bottom of the article. Give it a try!

I had the game in my possession but for whatever reasons never played it. Like you I recently popped it in for a go. I agree it's a bit "spongy" for my liking as well. Cool little game, but I'm definitely not the biggest fan of it.

I just noticed that they took out ALL the voicework in second edition. It's something to consider for the article.

Unless I didn't see it earlier, what is her name? Is it the title of the game?
Otherwise, awesome! Thank goodness this game is finally on Hardcore Gaming 101

The main character is the "titular" character, meaning they have the same name: "Umihara Kawase".

Wasn't this out on BS-X? It certainly looks like a cheap BS-X title.

I could never get into these games, mostly because of the graphics style.

I could never get into these games, mostly because of the graphics style. You are not alone in that opinion. I found the graphics to be okay but nothing to write home about. Still I knew before hand this game was going to be different from reading about it in other places. What I could never figure out was how to swing appropriately from one platform to the next. I tought if I kept practising it would come to me eventually but after a few weeks of trying I gave up. This is why I think so many people love it. Those few who get it will probably think they are so smart because they figured out something 95% of the general retro gamer population won't. If I had figured it out I would probably would feel the same way! I guess I am really missing out.

I was finally persuaded to track this game down thanks to this article. It was definitely what I hoped it would be in terms of challenge (I'm playing the PSX version on ePSXe with a gamepad) and surprised me further because the core mechanic seems so much like the grappling hook thing from Worms 2 on PC. Which is so damn great to me. I used that thing constantly during online play and my previous skill with that made Umihara a little easier for me to get in to I think.

Should be noted that the second edition of Shun left in the voiced ending songs.
Whats this about "spongy" physics? If youre referring to the rubber nature of the line, its meant to be that way, and makes for all the more fun. Allows you to climb walls, slingshot yourself along the ground, etc.
For the record, the most basic trick that should open up a huge amount of possibilities is backslinging (dont look at me - I didnt name it). When swinging back and forth, if you start reeling in the line at one apex youll be propelled at higher speed upwards towards the other apex. You can use this to climb up onto platforms from below and cross large gaps.

Apparently there might be a patch that makes everything better; let's hope so. It would be nice if they cleaned up the game and localized it for North America (an Umihara first!) I, for one, would love to finally have some Umihara on-the-go (that sounded way better in my head.) In the end, all this renewed interest for the series can't be a bad thing. And it certainly gives hope that we'll get a true sequel sooner rather than later. I can dream, can't I? www.siliconera.com/2008/07/14/natsume-snags-rights-to-umihara-kawase-portable/Rewrite perhaps?
