Let me be the first to say: awesome, it was about time!
Some portrait pics are missing.
EDIT: Am I the only one that thinks Ax Battler gets too damned hard half way through? The battle system requires such perfect timing in hitting enemies it's just ridiculous. How far did you guys get?

I don't know if this would be useful, but you can change Golden Axe: The Duel's bios on MAME to USA and the game will be in English. Not too many people realize that.
To do that just right click on the game, go to properties, then MISC and change the bios to USA. It works with a lot of Saturn based games.

For some reason Golden Axe: The Duel is labeled as "Axe Project 3" in the credits. I guess that has more to do with the fact that its the third proper arcade installment than anything else though.

mame works, but what exactly is return of death adder, model 2, system 16, what? for model 2 i guess there's modeler(not sur fi theres anything newer that can handle it). system 16... calice can cover it anyway(also does the cps's, neo geo, and system 18).
i'd roll with mame, but i can understand otherwise. mame is more of a jack of all trades, master of none deal, and as it is, i do use kawaks for the cps's and neo geo.

Revenge of Death Adder is System 32. MAME runs it mostly fine.

I can't for the life of me understand how sane human beings can like the Genesis version of Golden Axe. Sloppy hit detection, bad animation, the controls feel like muck and in general it makes me drowsy just playing it. Must admit I had no clue about the back attack though. Keel from The Duel gave me quite a laugh. Gillius is a hidden character in Sega Superstars Tennis, and they stuck the poor guy with a nasty case of beer belly. There also appears to be a Golden Axe stage.

I remember playing the Genesis version way back in the day. I used some code at the title screen to get something, I forgot.. But I also played III, and that was pretty awesome too.

Yeah, I still think that GAIII is the most solid of the Golden Axe beat-em-ups. Never understood why people hated on it (same with Streets of Rage 3 I guess).

Very nice article. It's great to see Revenge of Death Adder finally get a writeup on this site, it's easily one of the finest beat em ups to grace the arcade.
only one minor correction:
The SMS version does indeed have both the dash and running jump attack.

Yeah, I still think that GAIII is the most solid of the Golden Axe beat-em-ups. I used to love it and thought it was the best too, but nowadays it's just unplayable to me.

Yeah Revenge of Death Adder is actually what made me realize it was foolish to not have a Golden Axe article. It's the rare that game that's both gorgeous to look at an also a lot of fun to play. I think it does a much better job than GAIII of adding more content while still making it feel like Golden Axe.
GAIII is indeed a solid game, I still feel really let down by it whenever I come off of playing GA/2/Revenge of Death Adder. Like Deus Ex 2, Thief III, etc. Good game in its own right but it can't compare to its predecessors. It lacks some sort of personality that I felt was really strong in the other games.
I had no idea the running jump+downward stab worked in the SMS game, don't know how I missed that.
Genesis Golden Axe was a technical marvel at the time of its release. This came out at a time when no home platform could ever compare to the graphics of an arcade game. Genesis Golden Axe's hit detection is better than I think people give it credit for though.
It has the occassional glitch but compared to most arcade ports of the time it's impressively accurate in its feel and speed. It's clear a lot of love was put into this version of the game. It even headlined Sega's early Genesis commercials regarding how much Genesis had the arcade feel "honey? We bought you Golden Axe *parents wheel in an arcade cabinet.*"
The background design stands out in this respect, if you look at the screenshot comparisons notice how the Genesis port, artistically, does the best job of compromising accuracy of prominent setpieces like that gnarled tree while still changing the background in a way that functions smoothly on the system but still evokes the visual style of the arcade game.
Lesser ports like the SMS version try to be more accurate artistically by keeping the fog and vague tree outlines of the original. It's an effect that, in execution, works better with a layer or two of parallax scrolling and less repetition between trees though. They went above and beyond with the Genesis version by making alterations like this to compensate for the removed content.
