It's been awhile since I posted a new article (got a few contributions that still need editing), but here's one I've been working on for a month or so, despite it not being very long: hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/digdug/digdug.htmI actually wrote this because I love Dig Dug II, and felt it never quite got the respect it deserved. For the longest time, I also wasn't the biggest fan of the original game, although I've grown to like it. I grew up with the Atari 400 version of the game, which is a good port. I still need to write an actual intro/ending, and go into detail of the ports, because I really just snagged pics without really playing them.

Really nice, I did not know about the Online Battle Dig Dug, I'd really want to try it :/
Also I keep getting an error when I try to download the MP3s after logging into fileplanet...is it just me? Could someone check?

Some additions to Dig Dug 1:
* It's not the exact same hardware as Galaga. In fact, it's much easier to service, being a single board and missing the custom Z-80 chip used for starfield generation.
* Dropping any two rocks makes a bonus item appear. I'm unsure if you can get two bonus items on the same board in the same life (e.g., if you can drop four rocks in one round). The galaxian is a bonus item.
* In some versions, you get more points just for digging at the lower strata (10 pts per chunk for highest level, 20 for next, etc.). I *think* this is also the way it works in the arcade, but this was my strategy for high scores on the home versions.

i liked dig dug 2 as well, odd that it didn't get as much recognition. certainly seemed like, from a gameplay point of view, it had more going for it.

Also I keep getting an error when I try to download the MP3s after logging into fileplanet...is it just me? Could someone check? Nah, they're not uploaded it. Either there's something wrong with the Fileplanet servers, or my log-in info is wrong. Some additions to Dig Dug 1: * It's not the exact same hardware as Galaga. Dig Dug Arrangement was the only reason I ever went to that one diner in Succasunna. Then they replaced it with a crane game. *sigh*

One side didn't work, but still!

It's Mr. Driller the evolution of Dig Dug or are they totally unrelated? And in that same theme, any chance of a Mr. Driller article?

There are rumors that Mr. Driller was originally meant to be called Dig Dug 3, but I kinda doubt it. They probably just found a way to incorporate old Namco properties as fan service. Also, Toby from Baraduke is supposed to be Susumu's (Mr. Driller's) mom, and Taizo's ex-wife.
I'm not a Mr. Driller fan at all, it's never really jived with me. It's one of those games I try every once in awhile just to see if I can make sense of it, and usually just give up. That said, I hear the Gamecube one is kinda good, even if there are issues using a Freeloader and memory card, since it's JP only.

I've never been a Dig Dug fan and I always thought Mr. Driller was just the evolution of it but now I remember that Mr. Driller is all about getting to the bottom while Dig Dug is about defeating the enemies.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hlTAhBvElIBut in all seriousness, YES! I've been a huge fan of the original and the sequel. Two awesome games. Minor correction: Dig Dug: Digging Strike was released for Windows PC in 1997 by Infogrames, with no actual involvement from Namco. You mean Dig Dug Deeper edit: Perhaps this could be a back-to-back article with Mr. Do? haha

I don't know what it is about Dig Dug 2, I could never get into it. Even now, I'm finally starting to like it, but I still can't get into it the same way I could with Dig Dug 1.
There also seem to be two different versions of DD2, with slightly different graphics on the pump being the only difference I've been able to discern.

Adding to the Dig Dug 2 love. I even thought the DS game was pretty cool, even though the idea of the originals was hard to expand on.

Mr. Driller IS actually related to Dig Dug story-wise (!), in that Susumu is supposed to be the original Dig Dug's grandson (might have been son, but I think it was grandson). This comes from the one and only Mr. Driller game I ever played, "Mr. Driller G" on the PS1... story mode made it very clear that Susumu and Dig Dug are related, and Dig Dug actually appears in the game's story mode as a senile old man (and is playable!). Doesn't really look much like he did in the old classic, though. (:
I, too, can't stand Mr. Driller. But still, it should probably be mentioned in the article somewhere, if Namco has indeed decided that the two series are supposed to be related.

This is the plot for Dig Dug: Digging Strike as well on the DS. Taizo seeks glory when the monsters start appearing again, introducing himself as the man who handled the "Dig Dug Incident of 1982."
