Fantastic article for such a bad game. Maybe the article is too good for this game series? Reading about Bubsy 3D made me remember EGM's 150th Issue with Seanbaby's "EGM's Crapstravaganza: The 20 Worst Games of All Time". That too was a good read. www.seanbaby.com/nes/egm17.htm

I liked the original Bubsy. Bubsy 2 wasn't near as good, and I never played Bubsy 3D or the Jaguar game.

Bubsy 2 was probably the best in the series. But then, it was also the only one I ever bought (I rented the first one and 3D, and played the Jaguar one at my uncle's house - seems he bought it for a dollar at a flea market with Alien VS Predator and the Jaguar port of Wolfenstein 3D).

After reading that article for a bit, I have to conclude that whoever was reviewing must not have been very good at the first Bubsy. The way he describes all the possible ways Bubsy can die and the "bad level design" and "sloppy hit detection" makes the game sound like it was impossible. When I was 14, I was so good at this game that I could play it from beginning to end, straight through, and only lose a total of five to ten lives. It's all a matter of figuring out how the game mechanics work and then remembering them as you handle the challenges presented.
Yea maybe I'm over-reacting. Bubsy was one of my childhood heroes. Surprisingly, I never knew how heavily hyped he was--I played his game completely by random choice.

I've only played the original Bubsy for the Genesis (which holds a special place in my heart- as it happened to be at a local gaming competition a weekend after I'd rented it again- resulting in my earning a brand new copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 when all was said and done). It was not an easy game. I used to dig out an old GamePro to skip around the various levels using passwords, which allowed for a fair deal of exploration (since it was hard and I was impatient to go through the levels one by one). While Mario had his mushrooms and Sonic did have his rings, Bubsy at least tried to balance it with nine lives and the fact you continued near to where you bit it (usually by sneezing at the screen or looking at it funny, but I digress). It was still in my opinion a fairly solid game and fun to explore, though far from great (on the flip side it's been at least a good 10-12 years since I last played it). Bubsy 3D however looks like it took a critical blow from the ugly stick with permanent graphics and gameplay drain.

I remember back in the ninties, there was this after school kiddy game show on free to air TV here, and one of the last segments on the show was to one member from each of the teams play video games (Usually play for 60 seconds or something), with the kid that got the best score moving his/her team onto the final round.
Anyway, this relates as one of the games they'd play was bubsy (In this case, they went by the amount of wool balls collected). I actually wanted to play bubsy because of this, though when I finally did play it...I wasn't that impressed.

Ironically I missed all the hype, hence why I took the game for what it was and was able to enjoy it.
Bubsy: The precurisor to Daikatana syndrome perhaps?

Man I have never played the sequels but I loathed the original Bubsy! Sadly...I still finished it...no idea why... Luckily I only got a copy of it from a trade in...but I traded in a good game for it

Too much hype + medicore game = People being more pissed over it than if it was simply a bad game. John Romero failed at making anybody his bitch, and Bubsy never took the stab at the hearts and minds of gamers it intended to either. More on Daikatana: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daikatana

...Bubsy was hyped? Why wasn't I informed?
Anyway, I played Bubsy before and I wasn't especially impressed. It wasn't really memorable, but it was a good way to kill 5 minutes.

Yeah all of the magazines at the time were REALLY hyping to be The Next Great Platformer. Except I remember reading a review or two before it can out and it got kinda average ratings. I think that's why I put off actually buying it. I'll need to research that though.
It'd stick Bubsy II in the "mediocre" category, since it's playable but not particular exciting. But the first two - they are way to difficult to be fun. And not "challenging" difficult, but "I seem to be dying an awful lot for some reason" kind of way. I really think it's the counterintuitive way it's set up. Bubsy controls like Sonic (except he runs even faster and with a lot more inertia behind his jumps), except most of the levels aren't really designed for it. Not all of Sonic's levels were either, but they also gave you some leeway with the rings, and they didn't kill you for falling too far either. I'm definitely harsher on it because of the "Daikatana Syndrome" though. Awesome Possum is surely a worse game (although it did have a life bar), but I don't hold the same ire for it.

I actually liked the original Bubsy a lot when I was younger... I thought that the carnival levels were totally tits, what with bouncing from the Test Your Strength dealies and launching oh-so high. I'm not afraid to admit that I may have been a bit daft back then. I still don't think it's as bad as people rip on, but it's no fluckin' Super Mario World.
I think I rented II once, and wasn't greatly impressed. Damn minigames... never even touched 3D with a ten-foot pole.
