www.hardcoregaming101.net/irem/irem.htmThis article focuses on a bunch of Irem arcade games that share the same graphical style, like Undercover Cops, Gallop, In the Hunt and Gunforce 2, the predecessor to the Metal Slug series. I'm not really sure the word "post apocalpytic" really describes the style of these games though. The graphic style is definitely a common thread but can anyone else think of a better way to describe them? As usual, it's still a draft, and needs a bit of editing and more pictures before it's actually done.

Nice. I'm a big Irem fanboy. The article misses some facts, though. Irem and SNK's relationship is previous to Nazca. I mentioned it in a recent article for my site ( postback.geedorah.com/revisiones/ng_last_resort_01.htm ), although in Spanish. Seems SNK hired some Irem designers from time to time. Last Resort, Top Hunter or KOF '94, for instance, were developed by some Irem people. It is also said that some of the R-Type designers worked on Pulstar, an SNK game even if it has the Aicom logo. And I think you should have mentioned Hook, clearly made by the Undercover Cops team. Not "cyberpunk" at all, but the style is exactly the same. Indeed, I don't think that style is defined by the cyberpunk or even the mechanical theme, which just happened to be a standard then. It's just about graphic conception and the use of colors.

You mean the Sega CD/SNES Hook game published by Sony Imagesoft? I'll check it out (I didn't write the article so I'm not familiar with it. I hadn't even played Undercover Cops up until last night)

I think their spritwork on both In the hunt and the Metal Slug series (Right up till nr 3) has yet to be rivalled.

For the Undercover Cops section, is the Super NES version based on the Japanese Arcade version or the World version?

Was that even released in America? The author provided me a picture of the box, but I can't find the ROM anywhere. So I just played the Japanese version, which is based off the Japanese arcade game.

It's deeper than that, Irem developed most of Ikari Warriors (!!!) for them. Which is how they got Ikari Warriors and the unstoppable Victory Road out almost within a year of each other. It's really interesting to see the influence SNK and Irem had on each other's work over years due to the shared developers. Two great companies (Gallop and Last Resort share some boss designs). The most blatant is how the first level of Pulstar is a remake of the first level of R-Type II, and the boss is the same as R-Type II's first level boss. This same boss type was used again for the end of Blazing Star. Good stuff. Also Kurt, if you have an Irem post apcalyptic article you NEED to play Perfect Soldiers and put that in. It's a terrible game but it's a Irem one on one fighter set after an apocalypse. The characters have names like Arabian Moon, Evil Talon, and Dionsaur. A "must play." Gamefaqs lists Undercover Cops as getting a US release but I'll be damned if I EVER saw it outside of an arcade. US SNES version would be a pretty cool find.

There is no USA SNES version of Undercover Cops. Gamefaqs has TONS of wrong dates, so never go by that.

Yeah we should look at the Video Game Museum next time. I figured the date was wrong since it's listed as coming out like a week before the Japanese version. What I don't understand, is if most of the information is submitted by users, I mean who the hell even knows what Undercover Cops IS that they would both know about it and make that mistake? People suck.

UC had, at least, a beta US version for the Super NES. It was shown at some convention then and some mags published it. How's it relevant, anyway?

I'd think any post-apocalyptic Irem game would be relevant for a thread with this title.

I was inspired to go play the Japanese version of Undercover Cops, and the control (and added moves) do feel more refined. Though, I liked the game before I knew that the Japanese one was better. I do love me beat-em-ups. And now, nudity! The female enemies (called 'Fox,' essentially Irem's answer to Poison and Roxy) wear rather revealing shirts that are cut off below the breast line. However, if you knock them through the air, pause the emulator as they fall to the ground, and don't tell me you don't see it! ;D ... my perversity is boundless, yes. Though, I am wondering if this can be submitted to I-Mockery's article on Sexual Moments in Video Games... Note: Wow, the American version is uncensored!
