westbound.proboards34.com/index.cgi?board=Vb2&action=display&thread=1097609384This is a board devoted the the HnI games. I don't have the guide that the thread starter references, but there are several Punch Out characters listed, such as the Pistons, the Bulls, some of the Super Punch Out characers, etc. Like the Fire Pro series they have clever name changes to avoid copyright... such as Piston Hotta for Piston Honda or Bald Bull Armstrong for Bald Bull. As a side note there are also some real life boxers in the game that have similar name changes to get around copyright.

Let's see what we have from the Misc. list: Andor Good Pasta - Pizza Pasta (?) Bald Bull Armstrong - Bald Bull Doc Leonard - Doc Louis (!?) Dragon Lee Chan - Dragon Chan Glass Jonny - Glass Joe Great Gashim Tiger - Great Tiger Kid Quick Chocolate - Kid Quick Mr. Sandman Simon - Mr. Sandman Piston Hotta and Apolo- Piston Honda and/or Piston Hurricane Rokky Bear Hugger Bill - Bear Hugger Super Macho Smith - Super Macho Man Vodka Vladmir Durankensky - Vodka Drunkensky Interesting how they just changed the name a bit to get them in the game. Anyone know if they look like the source material or if they act just like their Nintendo counterpart? Side note from the Misc. boxer list: "Hot - Blooded Kunio" as in from the Kunio-Kun series and "Wonder Boy WestStone"!?!?!?!

This Hajime no Ippo game referred to - was it released in the US? I swear one of them made it over here....What system, in any case? HnI: Victorious Boxers arrived to both Europe and US. HnI All Stars arrived only to Europe (in a different name, Victorious Boxers 2: Fighting Spirit). Both are PS2 games, so I don't know which one of them they were talking about.

There's a bit of confusion on the HnI games. From what I've read, HnI 1 came out in the US and EU as Victorious Boxers.
The next game was HnI2:Victorious Road. This was released in Japan only, and is the game where you can unlock all of those characters. It also has possibly the most in-depth sim mode ever... to the point where you have to work out specific muscle groups and determine your day-to-day diet in order to fine-tune your character.
The latest game is HnI All Stars which was released in EU as Victorious Boxers 2. It drops the career mode from HnI2, slightly improves the graphics, and adds some gameplay tweaks (there is a block button for instance... in earlier games, blocking was based on statistics). This was released as a budget game in Japan, somwhere in the $30-40 range.
They are all PS2 games, and are amazing. They are easily the best boxing games available and easily blow the Fight Night series out of the water. They are also extremely fast and tough as nails until you get used to the speed.
Reading a but further in that thread, it appears that the unlockable boxers that are based on existing characters/real life boxers look as close as they can, considering the style of graphics in HnI. Some people report that the skin color is off a little bit (perhaps to avoid copyright problems).

That punch out list looks exactly like the one on wikipedia... Anyways, you got to include the NES Power Punch 2 there, as the story goes that game was going to be a (rather stupid) Punch Out 2 game but Nintendo didn't like it or just didn't want anything to do with it and Sammy was forced to release it as Power punch 2 (notice there is no part 1). You can find arcade cabinet images and G&W boxes here: www.classicgaming.com/rotw/punchout/Yeah I scanned the ad for that game the other day. If you want to ad it to your article feel free, I'm getting ones for alot of games posted here if I run across them, as well as for my articles, just as neat little references. I thought it was punchout related due to the fact the main guy looks like Iron Mike. But man is it a weird looking game. Heck just check out the super freaky ad they used for it. img155.imageshack.us/img155/2075/lwf00160fq.jpg

There's a small typo in the character bios of Soda Popinski, but other than that great article! I was a bit surprised not getting any mentions for suggesting Wade Hixton's Counter Punch for the article, though. But it's not a big deal.

Frank Bruno's BoxingOne more game worthy mentioning in the article? It was released for Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC and ZX Spectrum. It's funny how I suddenly remember a game that I've only tried once in my life many, MANY years ago. A picture of Bear Hugger triggered my memory. ;D

A picture of Bear Hugger triggered my memory. ;D Now this has got to be one of the oddest oddities I have ever beheld... the first three opponents are ripped directly from Punch-Out, but with different names. And these names are even more flagrantly discriminatory than the original ones! I thought 'Pizza Pasta' took the biscuit, but 'Ravioli Mafiosi'?!?!?!? Wow. Words fail me.

Thanks for all the feedback so far! This was definitely a fun article to write about.
MP83, I'm so sorry about mentioning you! Thank you for pointing out such a great game! I wrote the section about Wade Hixton's Counter Punch well after I emailed Kurt the main series Punchout games.
Thanks also have to be mentioned to reyvgm for reminding me of the travesty that is Power Punch II. I definitely drew inspiration for that part of the article from Sotenga, as I had Strider Returns: Journey From Darkness in my mind the entire time I was writing it. Thanks again to Uncle5555 for the wonderful scan of an advertisment for that crapfest of a game.
Kurt - Didn't you get my email of the Wade Hixton pics I took? I was pretty sure I sent it out. BTW, nice screen grabs for the Super Punch-Out!! games and the arcade games.

I did! I just forgot to download them. I had already played a bit of the game before you sent it and grabbed a bunch of pics, so in my lazyness, I just grabbed those.
I'll update it with stuff from that...weird ripoff game.

I am told that the GBA Hajime no Ippo game is pretty much a clone of Punch Out!! The main difference is that the game is played from a first-person view, with you being able to see only your gloves.
The title is Hajime no Ippo the Fighting... it may be worth checking out to add to the article.
