www.hardcoregaming101.net/chaosseed/chaosseed.htmYeah yeah, I know there's a lot of heavy Japanese, and the game isn't exactly user friendly, but once you warm up to it...good lord it's addicting. It feels much closer to a PC strategy sim mixed with a healthy bit of action-RPGing, which means it's awesome. Anyway, I want to wait until I finish my After Burner article before updating, but I want to use you guys as guinea pigs for this tutorial I wrote: www.hardcoregaming101.net/chaosseed/chaosseed2.htmTell me - does any of this make sense? I did this late on Friday night and I was honestly a bit tired/woozy/kinda drunk and while it makes sense to me, I'm not sure if I've communicated enough of the basics so other people can play it. Plus I didn't translate everything, not because I'm lazy, but just because I don't know what they mean. It's mostly done to be read in conjunction with the FAQ I linked to in the article. Anyway, this game really needs a lot more recognition and I'd love to spread the word about it. I really hope it sees a translation, even if it's just the interface, because a LOT more people need to be exposed to it. Definitely download the SFC ROM and try it out.

Strategy? Aw, funkers. I'll probably die a thousand times over on the first battle. Still, if it fits on my ZSNES emulator, then sure, I'll give it a shot. Looks pretty dang awesome.

The battles are all real-time action. The only way you can lose, really, is by dying in these segments. Otherwise, the strategy only applies to the dungeon building, and really the only bad thing that can happen is you building an inefficient one. In which case, it'll just take a long time to beat the scenario.

I'm always up for a good action-RPG. While killing monsters to level up can be boring in some RPGs, a good battle system can make it much more tolerable!

Given a quick read of the article, it actually reminds me of an old game I used to sample on the 3DO called The Horde. You'd spend time and gold building a village, then at the end of every quarter, take control of your character to fend off attacks by hordlings who would be set on destroying people, crops, etc. The only thing is I believe you were just limited to sword slinging and didn't really level up much (though I think you could upgrade your equipment).

Actually, you're right, it is a lot like The Horde, minus Kirk Cameron and the spotty controls. (I've only briefly played it, but I've watched friends have at it.) I'll have to make mention of it.

Great article! It makes me really want to try it despite the language barrier, and I definitely plan to see how far I can get with your tutorial.
You know, Neverland's next game (Rune Factory for DS) sounds like it might emulate some of the Chaos Seed gameplay, with farming switched in for dungeon building....hopefully it will be as polished and addictive a game as CS.
