Freia?
I will probably need to ask you later about some of these, there's a lot of obscure ones. Plus other, non-SNK references. Mai seems to be dressed as Taki in one of her costumes, plus Leona dresses as Asuka and Rei from Evangelion? Some people are even saying one of Terry's costumes is a reference to Sol Badguy, which I guess could be correct, but it might be coincidental.

Kurt, when you get it, you've gotta let me know if KoF XI is truly the best game in the entire series, as my hopes predict. And don't tell me that it isn't on the grounds of Mai not being in it, because she sure as hell is in the console version! ;D I'm a bit miffed that there's no Yamazaki, but on the other hand, DUCK KING!!! And Leona has become something of one of my favorites lately, but oh well... B. JENET!!! And all of those Edit characters... I never expected to see Gai Tendo in 2D, but OH SNAP! There he is! Man, SNK needs to release Buriki One on a home console... it probably wouldn't fare well by itself, but perhaps as part of an Art of Fighting collection? There's one out in Japan, but maybe they could add it for a special American release... ah, I'm setting my hopes too high. That is a great website with all of the different character costumes. Sixteen overall for each character... unless I did my math wrong, that is 608 FUCKING COSTUMES OVERALL!!!!! I gotta say, B. Jenet in 3D looks like she could be on Peter Griffin's Sideboob Hour... *LOL* Just one question... who is Freia? Is she from Robo Army, or from another obscure SNK game that isn't coming to mind right now?

I never expected to see Gai Tendo in 2D Never played KoF 2000 or KoF Evolution? Freia is the unplayable female lead from Art of Fighting 3. Here's the "cosplay" costumes I recognize offhand: Kyo Kusanagi: Syo Kirishima's two designs. This was the first concept for Kyo (the white martial arts type outfit). The second is the brown jacketed biker outfit. Both of these are extra strikers in KoF Evolution and KoF 2000. Alternate Kyo: He has Rock Howard and Ralf Jones outfits. Iori Yagami: He has a Setsuna outfit and a Shen Woo outfit. Mark of the Wolves Terry: He has a Rock Howard outfit as well as one that I could swear is a homage to Terry Rogers from the early Neo Geo wrestling game 3 Count Bout. Lilly Kane: She has a Hotaru Futaba color sheme. Lien Neville: Has Whip costume. GEESE HOWARD: Has costumes for Goenitz, Karman Cole, one that reminds me of Silver from Buriki One, and an AoF2/Neo Wave Geese costume. Yuri Sakazaki: Costumes for Ryo, Robert, Freia, and her AoF3 out-of-game artwork outfit (this was her second costume in the first Maximum Impact). Ryo Sakazaki: Akira from VF and Ryu from SF? I can't tell for some reason. Alba Meira: Yagyu Jubei! Ralf Jones: Marcus Rossi, Alex from SF3. Clark Steel: One of his wrestler outfits is Raiden/Big Bear's singlet. Kula Diamond: Candy and Roxy (special strikers from 2000 who also appear in her win poses, her android pals). Kim Kap Hwan: Kim Don Hwan. Chae Lim: May Lee Jinju, a couple of the Buriki girls. Leona: Heidern, Rei and Asuka from Evangelion. Maxima: Sgt. Rocky from Robo Army. The viking outfit reminds me of that boss from Mutation Nation. Hattori Hanzo: Galford. Rock Howard: Awakened Kaede. Duke: NOBUNAGA! Jason from Friday the 13th, but with a chainsaw. Man that just made me think of how cool it would be if a high resolution 2D remake of Splatterhouse were handled by SNK. The announcer: Joker from Savage Reign/Kizuna Encounter.

Never played KoF 2000 or KoF Evolution? Freia is the unplayable female lead from Art of Fighting 3. A. AUGH! You're right! He was an alternate Striker for Takuma in KoF 2000! Never played Evolution on the DC... which I do rather regret. But I read that he's a hidden Striker in that one too! B. That's right... Robert's friend. I recall her now. Here's the "cosplay" costumes I recognize offhand: And yet Ralf is also a playable character... interesting. I should get that game... Not to mention, they all look really cool because... well, he's Geese. SNK still wants to play rough, eh? Those crazy funsters! ;D Heh... now I just find that ironic. Back in 1993, in the very first Samurai Shodown, Hanzo and Galford actually were head swaps. Thankfully, Gal had a new stance in SS2 and they distinguished themselves from each other with their attacks. You don't mean the last boss of Ninja Masters based off of infamous feudal warlord Oda Nobunaga?! Rasa, stop right there. You have just said the greatest thing in the history of forever.

It's probably the "Nobunaga" of Samurai Shodown V (Gaoh) now that I think about it, they use the personality's accepted image any time they want a character that's a ruthless feudal ruler.
Mmm...Nobunaga's Ambition...I smell upcoming article.

OK! King of Fighters XI!
Yeah, it's damn good. The roster is great, although I still don't like Duo Lon and Shen Woo. You know how Shen Woo had that one attack that you could hold down the button for like several seconds and try to catch your opponent off guard? Yeah, you can only charge it for like a second now. I think I've finally taken a liking to Ash though.
Oswald is awesome. He does this crazy stuff with his arms in his idle stance, and the card attacks are much more awesome than I expected. It's less like Gambit and more like...him wielding a glade weapon. I haven't played much Elizabeth, but Momoko is okay. One of those characters that you can button mash and do a lot of combos with, but she has a lot of supers that require that you memorize dial-a-combos. B. Jenet is totally rad, I can't believe I never played as her much in Garou. Haven't messed with Eiji or Duck King much, and never really "got" Kasumi.
Unlocking some of the extra characters is a pain though. For the midbosses, you need to finish your opponents with a certain number of DMs or LDMs (the guides aren't clear on how many which is annoying) by the fourth stage. Then you fight one of the midbosses. By default, it's Adelheid, but depending on how well you do, you can fight Hayate, Gai, Jazu or Silver (sp?) So far I've only gotten Hayate and Adel. Once you beat them then beat the game, they become playable.
More annoying are the console exclusive characters. You need to play certain mission modes, and some of them are really difficult. To get Mai, you play as her and need to fight every female in the game in a survival match, with the difficulty turned up pretty high. Plus you only regain health if you finish them off with a super move.
Magaki, the final boss, is a pain in the ass. Reminds me of like Onslaught from Marvel vs Capcom. It's hard to get close to him, but once you do, he's not that bad. He's still tough to kill even with the 1/2 life from the continue service.
There are also some new remixed music tracks, like Yuri's theme "Diet" from Art of Fighting 2, Terry's "Big Shot" from Fatal Fury 3, Shingo's "Still Green" from KoF '97, one of Iori's themes, and a few others. The port is excellent, the loading times are even shorter (!!) than the arcade. I hope there's a progressive scan mode, because even though the backgrounds are gorgeous, they do tend to shimmer a bit.

Mmm...Nobunaga's Ambition...I smell upcoming article. BWARGH. It's not that I dislike that game... I just never knew what the fuck to do! Perhaps your article can detail the basic gameplay... an FAQ could probably do so as well, but... uhhhhhhhhhh... ummmmmmmmm... godspeed with your writing, sir! ;D I thought that Oswald looked awesome without seeing him in action... good to know that he totally rules. At first, I had low hopes for Momoko (as I'm not too fond of 'kiddie' designs in most games, Hokotomaru is probably my least played character in Garou, and Bao... nuff said), but since I heard that her style is Capoeira, I became interested. The dial-a-combos bit sounds irksome, though. There's a reason why I rather dislike Killer Instinct. Jenet rules in more ways that one. I'm surprised that there isn't more hentai of her she'd make her way into the big KoF tournament... teaming up with Tizoc and Gato for the Mark of the Wolves team. AWESOME!!! Also awesome is the fact that Kim ditched the Korean team. Jhun was cool, but a bit tricky to play as. Chang... well, I play pretty good with him, but I REALLY FUCKING HATE FIGHTING THAT FUCKING FATASS!!! Choi... doesn't piss me off as much as Chang, but I don't like much playing as him. However, Kim has always been kickass, and now that he's joined Terry with the old-school Fatal Fury team... two words, biznatches: DUCK KING. I imagine he's carried over much of his moves from RBFF2? Eh, give it time. A more worthy FAQ will be composed eventually, I'm sure. OH YE GODS NO!!! NOT A FUCKING SURVIVAL MATCH!!! I utterly hate those. Difficulty usually gets crazy painful around the tenth fight... *sigh* Maybe there's some hyper-cheap move to perform by one of the characters... to unlock all of the characters in Survival and Time attack in KoF2002, I just picked Rugal and Kaiser Wave'd the bloody hell out of my opposition. Hopefully, there's something like that to wreck them... keep on playing and let us know what else you find. Nothing's keeping me from pimpin' with Mr. Big. Hmmmmmmm... moreso than Igniz? Sounds neato. Glad to hear that it kicks much ass... but do let me know if you find an easy way to get Mai.

Eh, I wussed out and got one of those AR Max USB key thingies on my lunch break, the kind that you can transfer save games with. There's already saves out there with all characters unlocked, so I'll just download it. Probably do the same for MI2 so I can get better pictures of the costumes and not resort to simply grabbing pics from somewhere else. I just don't have the patience for this kind of stuff any more.
Robert's is worse. The idea is, you're fighting King, and you can't move. All you can do is throw fireballs, and you need to either block King's attacks and try to attack her. Also, you have 1/4 life and hers' is full. It's really annoying.

It's a smart move in the long run though. They started this with the Dreamcast port of KoF2002. Shingo and King are there and not in the arcade version just so you'd have a reason to buy/keep playing the Dreamcast version.
I know I and some people were so into it we unlocked those two like the day we got the game, so I can understand them wanting to make the challenges a little harder. That Mai one sounds totally insane though.

Thankfully, I learned that Magaki becomes playable after beating the sixth challenge, and I imagine that he has a certain move that you can just abuse repeatedly which the opponent can't get past. That should uncomplicate matters. ;D

Quick thing about the article: Besides the wrong character portraits for the GBA KOF EX games (Moe Habana, Reiji Ogami, Jun Kagami, and Miu Kurosaki), there is also no information on Gato. He's my character in Garou, and I was certainly happy they used him in a KOF game although I hate the fact that his crappy sister made it into NeoGeo Battle Colieseum. I'm guessing KOF XI isn't coming to America is it?

Certain challenges force you to use set characters. Like in the Mai one, you have to be Mai. I unlocked Shion for real though - the challenge is nice enough to give you unlimited power bars, so I just Power Geyser'd the hell out of her. But yeah, I still need to fix a lot of those portraits. The blanks are just to let me know what else needs to be added. I'm not adept enough of a Gato player to really write much, so I'm hoping someone else can fill that in. As far as SNK knows, KoF XI does not have an American release. I'd love for them to bundle it with NGPC or something, but that seems unlikely. The only upcoming game on their PS2 schedule in KoF 2006/MI2. Heck, they haven't even said anything about the 3D Metal Slug and that comes out...today in Japan. They've abandoned the Xbox, much like everyone else, and have no current plans for a 360 versions. I hope we see some 2D 360 games, I really do, but there have been murmurs that it "doesn't reach their high-def" requirements. Which sucks, because Microsoft used to be good about things like this, I don't want to see them becoming the next SCEA. The only thing left is the Wii, and that's going to require yet another controller to be anything remotely resembling playable.

I'm not quite sure if Gato has a legit story in KOF 2003, but in Garou: Mark of the Wolves, he's an assassin with amnesia. He's much like Ryu from Street Fighter, touring the world and excepting every fighting challenge. In the ending of MOTW, in the finals Gato sees a mysterious man who Gato recongnizes as his father. Perhaps his storyline of finding his father is in the KOF games? His sister is Hotaru.
As for his fighting style, I have no idea what kind it could be. His fighting style is awesome however (I love his Earth's Wrath super). The only problem is that most of his good combos are a bit short ranged.

He's my character in Garou, and I was certainly happy they used him in a KOF game although I hate the fact that his crappy sister made it into NeoGeo Battle Colieseum. Gato is also my favorite/best character of MotW. His style is all kinds of awesome, and I really piss off my opponents by utilizing his jumping move that has four different endings to it. I disagree about Hotaru, however. She rules. There is no character in MotW that is unawesome... though, as I said earlier, Hokotomaru isn't one of my faves. I don't even think I'm spelling his name right. ... waitaminute... didn't I write about Gato in an earlier post?

The only thing left is the Wii, and that's going to require yet another controller to be anything remotely resembling playable. The retro controller would be fine for them though, as it's got the four face buttons plus the triggers if you must have macros for B+C and B+D. I really don't care what system they're on at this point, hell even PC ports would be fine, the country NEEDS more 2D games on the actual consoles. Sprite making is practically a dead art outside of GBA development teams and SNK itself. This upcoming generation of consoles could effectively be the last as far as ANY 2D games coming out in the US goes.
