Spent most of the afternoon on this: www.hardcoregaming101.net/athena/athena.htmIt's almost done. I want to add some official artwork of Athena through the KoFs, which I have sitting in the directory, it's just not resized, and I have to be up for actual work in like six hours. Fuck you weekend. If nothing else, there's a bunch of variations of the Psycho Soldier theme.

Looks awesome. Hey, if nothing else, this makes me want to go play Sonson again - the Capcom game mentioned in the article

I've beaten Psycho Soldier on an emulator. That game seems impossible to get through on 1 credit, let alone 10. :\ ...I wanna play the crappy little cell phone games...!

Athena... the original game, not so good. Psycho Soldier, somewhat better, if but a little mindless. I will admit that in KoF, Athena's voice can grow to be an irritant. But I do like her, if not just for the fact that she changes her outfit every year. ;D A good article, methinks. I never even knew about that Awakening game until just now!

KYAAaaaa! (Screams like Japanese schoolgirl)
I've always had a soft spot for Athena, even though the original famicom game was so choppy. Thanks for the article, Kurt.

"Fire! Fire! Psycho Soldier!" Damn', I was going to start a topic about full-vocal songs in the arcades and on game cartridge, starting with Psyco Soldier. It's suposibly the first game ever to feature a vocal in-game soundtrack. A great article btw!

I like Psycho Soldiers quite a bit. Athena I could never get into even when it was new. I've seen clips of the Athena live action show this ties in with. You're, uh, not missing much.

Ah, Athena. Probably the only place I really liked her was in KOF 2000, because then her voice was at least tolerable (though her annoying teleport and shield moves still irked me).

Quite the masochist aren't you, Kurt? :P
Athena on NES takes the cake considering it's not only a horrible game to play but it also made me feel shitty BEFORE I even started playing. For some reason, the game starts with a solid grey screen and lags there for a second before it gets to the title screen. It's not unlike the grey screen you sometimes get when a game isn't working. :/ So when I first bought the game, I was going insane cleaning it over and over, busting my ass and eventually coming to the conclusion that the cartridge must be thoroughly broken. Not until then did I have the patience to leave it on for more than a couple seconds at a time, and there was Athena's facing look back at me, taunting me for being too impatient when testing the game.
So, as Kurt said about his weekend, fuck you Athena.

The funny thing is, I don't even like Athena. Like, I hate playing as her in KoF (the voice, mostly, plus her SAIKO SOOODO has no range and the teleportation is useless), and her games are pretty bad (except Psycho Soldier, which is just kinda boring.) But I've been on an SNK kick, so, hey.
Plus the Psycho Soldier song, especially the new version of KoF XI, is really catchy. The orchestral one makes me crack up for some reason.

Heh... all this bittersweet dislike for Athena... ironically, I've taken to liking everyone on the Psycho Soldier team, of which I was previously not a big fan of. Yes, that even includes Bao. I'm quite the tolerant bastich.

The article is missing some ports: * Athena (Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64/128, ZX Spectrum) * Psycho Soldier (Commodore 64/128, ZX Spectrum) Links: World of Spectrum.org - AthenaWorld of Spectrum.org - Psycho SoldierCheck out the additional material and magazine references, especially the cover art of Athena. I'm rather sure that I've seen Psycho Soldier for MSX, but I have yet to confirm this...

Those pants may be short, but it's much better than no pants at all. ... I still have nightmares about Kinta's underage genitalia from Power Instinct 2... they haunt me.
