www.hardcoregaming101.net/alteredbeast/alteredbeast.htmThrew this one together over the weekend. Again, it's not quite done - I need to detail the PC versions some more, add pics of the (awful) PC Engine CD intro, stick in some voice clips, and detail the rather silly ending. Altered Beast doesn't really stand the test of time, but it's fun to look back on. This is mostly one of those articles I did just for all of the comparisons pics. Plus I never knew they added so much to the Famicom version, despite it still being a bad game. Also gives me a chance to detail the horrific PS2 game.

WISE FWOM YOUR GWABE!!!!!! Sorry, totally had to do that The first time I played Altered Beast was on the Sega Smash Pack Vol. 1 for the Dreamcast and was probably one of the least painful ones to listen to. Never cared too much about the game that much. Good write up on the article though Kurt! This sentence is a little weird. What kind of power-ups are in this game other than the ones that help you transform?

D'oh. I clarified it. There are like earthquake powers, adrenaline, regeneration, stuff like that. Nothing too impressive.

Due to such a limited invincibility window after being hit, the game has pissed me off many a times. And I've tried the PC Engine Duo version out, definitely not a good conversion.

Ugh. Altered Beast. Never liked it, though I did managed to beat two stages of the Genesis version. The article is very well done, as usually. Only found one typo:

The cosmic space type background in the GBA Altered Beast looks almost exactly like a boss background in Gourmet Barayarou on the Super Famicom.

I've always liked AB, ever since this one store that dealt with various rare games had an arcade cabinet of it with Free Play on. Unrefined as the control was, I always found it fun for its atmosphere. Oh, how I just loved collecting each orb and hearing "POWER UP" announced out loud, and transforming into the almighty werebeast was the ultimatum of awesomeness. Besides Tekken, I know of no other game that allows me to control a vicious bear. (Speaking of the bear, his breath was petrifying, instead of poisonous. That's just me being persnickety. ) "WISE FWOM YOUW GWAVE" is a forever immortal quote, and so is "WELCOME TO YOUR DOOM!" If you ask me, the best home port is still the Genesis conversion. Lemme ask a question: Does the Famicom version have limited continues? If not, I may consider giving it a playthrough for the new levels... And a big WTF on the PS2 version, which I never even knew existed until today... and I guess I can understand why.

I played the Genny version some eight years ago, give or take two. It was the only two-player game that wasn't Sonic, so I played it some times, I didn't like it, but it was gaming. I remember that reaching beyond that level where you transform into a bear was impossible.

Yes, it is indeed merry, let us rejoice for that matter! Anyway, that first boss just plain freaked me out, what with all the heads and all.

Exactly my opinion about this game. But come on! A bear with petrification breath! I thought that would have sold any game... ah well. I do admit that it can be frustrating to play... specifically as Kurt said, "arcade-style difficulty meant to eat your quarters," or something of the like.

I could finish this bad boy on one quarter back in the days of Golden Axe and Superman. I used to own the NES unlicensed version, it controls good and is longer. It has a crazy ending too where the lights turn on and you find yourself inside a movie theater. Was the original ending like that too??
