That's crazy. o_O What's with the twitchy thing he does? Is that him just impatiently waiting for an item to appear or something else?

He's editing together save states, not continuing past certain critical points until an enemy drops one of those scrolls that increases your speed.

People on the internet can find a way to be elitist about anything.

True enough. I still enjoy watching time attacks (I still remember my jaw dropping at the original Morimoto SMB 3 time attack, which can probably be considered the granddaddy of all time attacks). For those too lazy to read the link- there's a use of save states and emulation speed to give perfect control/timing to break the game or even exploit bugs in the programming. Usually it's fun to watch and the LotW time attack was no exception.

From the article: I honestly don't understand how a kid could get through this game. It's immense and crazy. Did anyone anywhere actually beat Legacy of the Wizard when it was new? I know I sure as hell didn't. I've beaten it years later as I got older, taking on the game without a FAQ or a map is like shaking hands with the devil himself.
I did beat it when it was new, and I used no codes or maps. I was a kid at the time. Satan is doing well, by the way, he wonders why you don't call.
Anyway, this is actually a pretty good article. The "making the dungeon kick your ass" line is classic. And while I did, indeed, win the game all by my lonesome once upon a time, I doubt I could do it now. Not that I don't have da skillz, but because I have nowhere near that much free time or energy these days. It is a game made for a person who doesn't need to work for a living.

It is a game made for a person who doesn't need to work for a living. What do you mean? I work for a living, but I only work at weekends (12 hours per day), hehe. ;D But, yeah, this game is really time consuming. I remember when I used to play this for hours on real MSX2 hardware, no manuals or any backgrounds stories to help with my journey (they would've been in Japanese anyway). A pity, since I may have had a chance of completing this game. In case you guys didn't figured it out by now, the MSX/MSX2 game's passwords are in Japanese, so it was very time consuming for me to note down all those letters and then type them with a European keyboard. ;D

Man, I love Falcom. The Ys series is pretty great, but I love their lesser-known stuff like Legacy of the Wizard and Sorcerian, and am looking forward to articles on more of their games.
For some reason I really love the idea of an action/rpg side scroller. There's something appealing in the attempt to present a detailed fantasy/reality world from such a limited viewpoint.
Has anyone played the PC versions of Sorcerian? I had the first version (released by Sierra in the US) but according to Falcoms site they released upgraded versions of Sorcerian only a few years back.

Yeah a couple years ago, Falcom released two games for Windows 95+ Sorcerian Original is pretty much just an update of the original with Ys Eternal style graphics. Sorcerian Forever is a whole new game, I'm guessing with a similar graphical style. I just ordered the latter from them, although you can download both of them from Falcom's site for like 2000 yen each (although the lack of a CD means no CD music on the games that use them...and I'm not so much a fan of MIDI.)

OMG!! Please post your impressions of Sorcerian Forever when you get it!!! I am so tempted to order the Sorcerian Forever CD and the Sorcerian Original download. [edit] Some stuff I noticed on the Falcom page: Sorcerian Original, as you mentioned, is a remake of the original Sorcerian, which has 15 scenarios. Sorcerian Forever came out afterwards and was a self-contained 5 scenario game. Falcom can send you a packaged copy of Sorcerian Forever... Sorcerian Original is out of stock. However, you can download a copy of Sorcerian Original from all these online vendors that includes Sorcerian Forever with it for the price of roughly $40. Which sucks because I have a feeling that Falcom probably packages their games beautifully with nice manuals, etc, so you would be missing out on that. Hmm...

Apparently a budget publisher re-released a bunch of Falcom's stuff recently, which is what I got Sorcerian Forever in. (Ditto with Shin Legend of Heroes.) I saw pictures of the original packaging, and yeah, they were nice, but I can live without it.
I did apparently get this nice Romancia package though...

I'd love to navigate the falcom website, but it's in some moon man language.

Falcom actually linked my Ys page. That's really awesome that a company would give a damn about a foreign fan site. www.falcom.com/links.html

Their recent stuff wasn't good though.
Sorcerian Online was AWFUL!
Heck,it wasn't even developed by Falcom!

Yeah, I suspect this is the version of Sorcerian Forever Falcom is selling on their site via mail order. Maybe I will request Himeya find me boxed versions of the Sorcerian games, as I just can't bring myself to spend ~$40 on downloadable version games. Where did you get Romancia?
