I saw this game being listed for the Sharp X68000: "Darius Dokomade Tatakaemasuka". Plus Darius 1 is also listed as having a X68 release.

Found some info: www.rough-note.net/doujin/doujin3.htmIt's a homemade game that's essentially a Darius boss rush. Might be worth mentioning, if I can remember to update. This same page lists ports of the PC88 Ys and MSX Gradius 2 to the X68k.

Here's another Darius trivia for you: Apparently, the game was partially inspired by an anime called "Great Sky Dragon Gaiking" (which aired in America as part of the Force Five series). The plot is your standard evil aliens coming to invade Earth, being stopped by a giant robot. Only these aliens happen to fly around in ships shaped like fish--having seen this anime (I have a video of it, in fact) I can say the fish actually DO sort of resemble the mechanical ones in the Darius games. And yes, the actual name "Darius" pops up in the anime too! (I forget whether its the name of a planet or a person though).
So I guess we know where the idea came from....

I have the box and everything for the PC port of Darius Gaiden if you want a scan or the music tracks (the cover is the same as the Japanese cover though so it's kind of redundant).

Bump. So, is it safe to say the "Darius III" title shown in this flyer, is what eventually became Metal Black? Or are these screens of a project that just never surfaced?

Those are images of Darius Gaiden. Most non-hardcore Darius fans don't realize that Darius Gaiden was named Darius III until just months before release, which all the magazines of the time indicated back in the 1995 AMOA Expo.
This is actually one of my biggest points of contention, which I've mentioned on Shmups before. Almost everywhere claims that Metal Black was designated as Darius III. This sounds reasonable enough, but I've never seen any source support such a claim, nobody has proven anything to me when I've asked for sources, and you'll notice nobody mentions where they heard this.
Proponents of this theory mention a "Darius III: Metal Black" being referred to in a Darius II ending. This is false; the only reference to Darius III in Darius II is in the X ending, where there's text that translates to "Darius III next year." In fact, everyone already knows that Metal Black credits another Taito game in its credits title: "Project Gun Frontier 2."
At this point, I'd still love to see some evidence that shows Metal Black was meant to be Darius III (which, again, seems more than reasonable from a logical point of view).

Another Darius not mentioned: Darius + for the Amiga (and Atari ST I think). It was made by The Edge with permission from Taito, and it's a really weird "conversion". hol.abime.net/268/boxscan

Quick Darius update: in one of the Space Invaders Get Even (great game!) expansion packs you can play as a Silverhawk (which makes the game really, really, really easy). Also, in Space Invaders '95, one of the ships you can select is the Silverhawk:

The PC Engine CD game Ultrabox 5, which appears to be a CD magazine/demo/retro game challenge [or current game challenge, considering the era] running series, spoofs Darius in one of the games. Here are some pics: I can't bother myself to investigate, but the Ultrabox series seems to be EXACTLY what Retro Game Challenge is, the only difference is that Ultrabox wasn't retro back then. Maybe they share the same devs? Or are at least influenced by it? Ultrabox has "mini" games of action, shooters and it even has an RPG in the vein of RGC's Guardia Quest, with sequels and all. Granted, RGC is much much better, but I now can't see it as the original game I once thought it was.

Ha, I thought that Ultrabox stuff was just trash but I guess the later ones actually have some interesting stuff.

By the way, I believe this one hasn't made it to the article yet: hol.abime.net/268As far as I can tell the game stinks like high heaven, but it's Darius alright.

That looks awful.
But yeah, the Darius article was written before I decided to start covering computer ports. If I ever get the time (not too likely) to go back and start playing them, I'll add them in.
