The first in a trilogy of articles covering a few old Sega arcade games, this is E-SWAT: hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/eswat/eswat.htmNot one of Sega's best titles, but the Genesis game is OK. Never quite got out of the shadow of Shinobi and I was always annoyed that you needed to play the first couple levels before they gave you the damn robo suit.

Ha ha I used to be good at this. There are glitches to be exploited, and once you know them it's easy to play through.

Man, nobody else likes E-Swat? Was I the only one playing it and Altered Beast at the arcades? Don't answer that.

I've only had the chance to play the arcade version on MAME, and was thoroughly unimpressed. Granted, this was something like 11 years after it was originally released. I'm much more familiar with the Genesis release, though, and used to be pretty fond of it. Of course, I can't even get past the second stage now...

Man, nobody else likes E-Swat? Was I the only one playing it and Altered Beast at the arcades? Don't answer that. Actually, I like both of those games! They're dated to be sure, but I still get a good amount of play out of them. On the premise of E-Swat, I liked it for being similar to Shinobi in gameplay yet being something different, and simply blasting the hell out of villains with your machine gun is always fun. I did, however, hate the horrible difficulty nutslap of cutting off continues during the last stage of the game. God, that pisses me off. Quite a few other games did it as well... Shinobi too, coincidentally. Kurt does make some good points, though, but I like E-Swat for what it is. The Genesis game is a good and underrated action title for the system and better than the arcade game, but I consider it less of a translation and more of a sequel myself.

I used to play a lot E-Swat in the arcades when i was a kid (it was the most impressive arcade at the time in my little mexican hometown, the others were much older), after some time i forgot the name of the game. Thanks HG101 for bringing back those memories. Gotta give it another run with an emulator.

I think the Genesis game is a lot better than the arcade original. Anyone else agree with me?

I love the Genesis version. Played it all the time back in the early 90's. Its cool how you start out as a rookie cop then they give you the bio suit later on. I remember in later levels you had to utilize the burner on the suit to fly around bottomless pits.

Yeah, I actually liked this feature, too! I've not played the arcade version of ESWAT, but I did enjoy the Genesis version a pretty fair amount. Although it was a bit clunky, it did have some really neat ideas implemented in it and was fun once you got used to the mechanics.

I think most people would prefer the Megadrive E-Swat. Best E-Swat title by far.

I like E-SWAT Arcade, even if it's no Shinobi. I think the main issue with it is that it doesn't know whether it wants to be methodical like Shinobi or all-out chaos like the Data East Robocop games, which leads to balancing and consistency issues. In the early levels, every single shot can be dodged if you're quick and careful. In that sense, the human levels are actually the best in the game, because everything is fair and clean-cut; they're the closest thing to a more forgiving Shinobi or Rolling Thunder. Then as it progresses, that balance is lost a bit, and there are cheap moments that you wouldn't mind or even notice in a typical chaotic shooter where you're constantly hosing and blowing shit up all over the screen, but that strike out in E-SWAT. The other thing that's odd about it is the way the levels are structured. There are 15 levels, all very short, and each of them with a boss battle. The bosses, however, are very weak; if you've got special attacks, you can kill most of them with two blasts and a few shots. So the too-frequent level transitions and all these mini-boss battles kind of hurt the game's flow. It's less of a problem than overly long levels, which can really kill a game, but it's not optimal. Still though, when the game's playing fair (which is most of the time), and you're dodging bullets and taking enemies out methodically, it's pretty fun. I also assume playing with a second player would help with fairness, though it'd make the levels even more of a breeze.
E-SWAT Master System is a weird beast. Like all of Sanritsu's Master System games, it's pretty crappy on a technical level, but what really makes it hard to play is that it never stops sending enemies at you, usually from behind, so that it's very hard to move forward at all - you keep having to turn around and shoot. They probably did that because the levels have been reduced to short, flat planes with almost no obstacles or variations. Still, if you get into it it's sort of fun in a really mindless way, as least for a few minutes, but it's too unfair to go on for long.

"OHHHHHHHH, THANK YOU OFFICER!" The delivery of that line is so corny. It's right up there with Sunset Riders' "Thank you, nice boys!"
