hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/thunderblade/thunderblade.htmPart 2 of that Sega arcade trilogy mentioned in the E-SWAT post. I was actually under the impression that Thunder Blade was really bad for the longest time, because the SMS and Genesis ports are pretty awful. But the original arcade game is actually really impressive, and I'm surprised how much more faithful (if still kinda crappy) the PC ports were.

I've never played the home ports so I never knew that this game had any sort of bad rap The arcade version with that rad moving chair and monitor was just so much fun to play and I remember sinking plenty of quarters into it back in the late 80s. Even though it had a 50/50 shot of sucking, I wish it'd been remade back when the 3D Ages line was all about remaking classic games. Would have nicely complemented Space Harrier (which I dug the remake of) and Outrun.

My first own Mega Drive game. I was expecting hot, fast-paced and cool arcade action, but what I got was more like, uh, mediocre chopper-shooter.
Never tried the arcade one, but I'l probably look into that later. Same for the PC ports.
EDIT: Pictures reminded me that I actually have this on Atari ST too. I once bought it and 3 other games thinking that they were for Amiga.

My probability of ever finding Thunder Blade in the arcade and ideally enjoying it the way it was meant to be enjoyed =

I used to play the arcade one a bit back when I was younger, but it has been a long time. I remember liking it. I'm not very fond of the Genesis "Super" Thunder Blade, though.

My local arcade has this sit down version. I remember it being a hard game but it was so cool to sit in that chair and hold the pilot controls pretending it was a real helicopter. I am guessing the difficulty settings must have been set to max for my case because most people didn't last long. It was an expensive game too (3 tokens) so that kept me from playing it more.

hey, this article should mention the Thunder Blade homage section from Gunstar Super Heroes, which actually plays in the style of the original game, unlike the After Burner homage section (or how the planned Altered Beast boss likely would've played).

Yes, the original arcade game is the only really good iteration of that game. But Beware... the cabinet version (nicely pictured above) is unplayable. The stand-up is OK. But make no mistake, it-s a quarter-muncher that relies on pure memorization.
Since we talk about these forgotten SEGA marvels, I have to bring up... POWER DRIFT. It was SEGA's FIRST try to use scaling sprites for the road isntead of the old hang-on/Out Run technique. And it gave us fantabulous scaling ups and downs, not counting tilting effects and all those fancy effects that would lead to Rad Racer/Mobile/Rally, and Out Runners. Still remains their best for me, along with Out Runners. Except Power Drift got a 1:1 conversion on Saturn. (Only the arcade PD, and at full retail price, too. Nice.) Great games, all of them.
