Very in depth. I happen to agree with the opinion of the IGN reviewer on this one. The sense of humor in this game left me cold... seemed to me they were trying too hard. The graphics definitely are in the "so bad the game looks terrible" category for me... everything is brown and gray and dull. I don't feel like God Hand really added anything to the genre other than a sense of humor, and it was something that I didn't really appreciate.

Oh, I love the game's sense of humor. Some of it is a bit lame and forced, but there are just so many little things that bring a smile to my face. Like the running animation. It's the same light, silly jog as your walking animation but sped up. Or the weapon whacking animation. Or the kung fu little dance Gene does when he's standing still. Or the cocky "look how awesome I am" pose, complete with taunting laughter, after executing certain powerful moves. There's just so much character in the game.
Plus the video acting is amazing. There's that one fat guy who taunts "What a pain in the bee-hind!" and it's just...so off. The voice death screams are amazing. One of my favorite lines in the game is when you meet the Midget Five ("Make sure your pets are...SPADE!"), and the only thing Gene responds with is by calling them "Douchebags" (I guess it's much funnier in game.) And the huge floating fruit, with the accompanying "I LOVE IT!". It's like a mid 80s arcade game brought up to vaguely current standards, except it's actually somewhat self conscious of how ridiculous the whole concept is.
I think the game's major failing is that it almost modernizes it too much. The game is way too long for its own good, because the bad guys take way too many hits to kill, and the levels are pretty barren outside of the occasional "save the villager!" tasks. The whole game would've benefitted if all 8 or 9 stages could be cleared in an hour or two, but games nowadays demand length to justify the purchase price, and this is how we get it.
...I've been thinking a lot about issues like this, mostly revolving around some complaints guided towards the recent Castlevania Portrait of Ruin. I might write up something about it for the Dungeon. Maybe add some of these comments to the God Hand article too.
Oh, and regarding the graphics? They get brighter later on, like in the Circus and Venice level. Still not great though. The character models look far, far, FAR better than the environments.

This game seems right up my alley, and I might even finish it, unlike "dull-final-boss" Joe.

Yeah, the other thing that turned me off was the enemies taking way too many hits to take out. Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks was like that too. I always felt the whole thing that made really good beat em ups great was the feeling you got once you learned how to play well. You would just mow through the enemies like they were nothing.

This game is brilliant; I haven't given my controller such a workout in forever. It's just so fun pounding on the O button to get just one more hit in!
I actually think the setting of the game is great, kinda like a light hearted Fist of the North Star.
As for complaints, about the only one I have is the seeming random occurrence of the demon fights (also addressed in the article). The game's hard enough as it is, so it's a bummer to have to fight a hard demon when you only have a sliver of life left, you know? Not too big a complaint, as I would have an intense game rather than a cakewalk, but still, the random thing's an odd choice.

The fact that this is Clover Studios last game intrigues me to give it a try. I watched the video review over at gamespot and it seems to have some enjoyable gameplay if your into button mashing.

I've got to say I'm not too sure I like the end of the review..or specifically this comment
"At this point in the gaming world, graphics shouldn't matter unless they're so good it adds to the game (Gears of War), or so bad and shoddy it detracts from the overall experience (any Ubisoft port). " I disagree with both points, more so that saying Ubisoft converstions suck as a general comment rather then using a specific game bothers me a little. Their PC ports of Cold Fear and Beyond Good and Evil are both superb.

Yeah, but then you have crap like Onimusha 3, which I suspect is only emulated and...not very fast either.

I'm not sure which exactly the author was referring to, but I changed "all" to "most". I know a lot of the non-Xbox versions for games like Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six were generally regarded to be not-so-great looking.

Man, I love this game. The camera definitely needs some work, as I'm getting really tired of getting smacked around from an enemy off-screen.
...And am I the only one with a sore thumb after playing it?

I love this game and most of the flaws people express are completely not withstanding. The camera angle is perfect. You need to be extremely close to the action so you can react to the enemies actions instantly. The game isn't frustratingly hard, it's challenging. Games like Ninja Gaiden hide their lack of difficulty by incessantly killing you. This game is actually hard, but if you die, it's your fault. The side-step/dodge in this game is all-powerful. You can avoid anything at any time. Beating this game is just a matter of mastering the often neglected dodge feature.
I think the sense of humor is great, and I think the over-the-top action fits perfectly, and it's clearly designed as a parody of Fist of the North Star. Even the graphics are good. The backgrounds are somewhat bland, but the character models are superb.
Another thing that has to be mentioned is the music. The quality is great, it's extremely catchy, and it never gets old.
Godhand is great, period, and IGN totally missed the point.
