www.hardcoregaming101.net/z/z.htmThis one is a slightly off kilter real time strategy game released around the time of Command and Conquer and Warcraft 2. I remember really liking this back when it came out, and it's still pretty darn good. I didn't even realize there was a sequel, which turned out to be really disappointing. Anyway, it has a lot more personality and style than the usual RTS - it feels very console-y, perhaps because it's British (if that makes sense) and is very much worth a shot.

This was my all time favourite RTS ever. I got this because I asked "what is a game like Warcraft?" and they gave me it. Fucking yeah. Now I remember!
Good article.

My brother played the crap out of this at the time - great game! The Saturn version has an "interesting" bug that makes it prone to crash if both sides have the maximum 50 units at the same time - I remember we had to kill off a squad or two on our side just to make sure we didn't lose our progress

Never played this, but it sounds interesting, if not maddening in some aspects. But then, RTS is the sort of style that should have at least a few moments of "#%#!@#!" included. And btw, a few corrections you may want to make:
each of which as a flag (has a flag)
cutscenes showing the robots blowing things (I hope you mean "blowing things up")
who hijinks set the tone (whose hijinks)
DOS version, an the whole game (and the whole game)
At least the explosion (explosions)

Holy crap I love this game! Definitely my favourite RTS of all time. I was just recently thinking this would be good to see on here actually... I had a quick look through (will read more later) and noticed you didn't mention the voice which says 'You are so crap!' when you are losing haha. I wish more games would insult the player when they are losing And yeah, the sequel is rubbish.

If you're tlking about games that insult you when you fail, I am obligated to mention Blazing Star. That game is awesome. Regarding RTSes: I rather enjoyed Warcraft 3 (the single-player campaign) and more recently Dawn of War 2 (again, single-player, although that's really more of a tactical RPG). - HC

I used to have Z as part of a PC compilation (a legal one...unlike the ones discoalucard buys on ebay ) and while I remember it to be extremely good and charming, I also remember it to be brutally difficult. At least it was nowhere near as hard as Robo Rumble where I only managed to finish one mission of one campaign. The other campaign's first mission was already impossible for me to do. xD Does anybody here remember Robo Rumble?

I was always confused as to just what the difference was between Z and Steel Soliders - possibly because at some point I might have seen something called "Z: Steel Soldiers". But at last, I am enlightened. Buy your very own boxed overpriced copy here: www.cdaccess.com/html/quick/zpr.htm

Argh! Why does <site:hg101.proboards.com "steel soldiers"> turn up zero hits on Google!?
Anyway, for the sake of completion, I thought I'd add that the Steam/GOG version is out now.
