Wanted to say that the fish characters are based on the fish of the same name (in Japanese at least.) Mambo and Samba are sort of puns. マンボウ (manbou) = Ocean Sunfish マンボ (manbo) = Mambo (dance) サンバ (sanba) = Samba (dance) ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%9E%E3%83%B3%E3%83%9C%E3%82%A6I became interested in aquatic animals after playing Darius too much.

Nice, so that's why there's a sunfish named Mambo even in Link's Awakening.

Really? I've seen this particular fish in a bunch of Japanese games. There's a game called Space Manbow (spelled "manbou" in Japanese) where you control a ship that looks like an ocean sunfish. Fun fact: These things are fucking huge! bigpicture.typepad.com/writing/mola_mola.jpg

They look like normal small fish that have been proportunately increased in size.

According to Wikipedia the largest size recorded was three meters long! I agree they do look like small fish for some reason, maybe the roundness. It's so unique, it's what got me interested in aquatic animals after seeing them in Darius.

Shellshocking Fun Fact: Fish never stop growing during their lifetime, except when contained in smaller enclosures. Then they adapt their size to it.
Fish like the Manbou eventually grow so big that they suddenly have no natural predators. I don't remember reading about the Manbou, but from the looks of it it seems like another prehistoric fish that has managed to survive until present day.

I don't know, a pod of Orcas might still go after them.

By the way, there is a Pachinko version of Gokujyou Parodius if that's of importance.

Type "giant jellyfish" into Google and you'll see a bunch of them.
