2. aren't there less terrible things you could do with your time, like bake babies into pies while they are still alive? What a coincidence. That very same thought enters my mind whenever zzz or Dais post on here.

Oh, Glory of Heracles II (NES); 1989 in Japan, fan translated. I played it for a bit when I was on my NES DQ/DQ-clone kick, but never finished it. It's basically a DQ II clone. I know nothing of Glory of Heracles I though.

Wyrd: As much as I'd love to include Ys, unless it had a console port in those years (which I'm sticking to so I can play as much as I can in that time freme), I can't take it. After all, if I included Computer RPGs, well I'd be in 1986 FOREVER! Links to check out? Oooh. As for 2, well... I suppose. But you must admit, since I'm playing whatever I can get done, some of these games will probably be pure hell (see: Hydlide. I really DID try to do it without cheats but... ugh) Sorry I didn't get to those dates. I went to sleep. But I'll be off and on working all day on it probably.

"playing whatever I can get done"?
As in you're playing through all of these games that you can?
I really hope that's not what you meant. Experience is very useful in explaining things, but experience can suffer greatly without context. Time spent playing the games might be better spent trying to figure out what people said about them back within 3-5 years of their release (or re-release). Even in the case of Japanese games, looking for pages put up by Japanese fans could offer more insight into what was interesting about those games than you might get in hours of playing them.

I am going to try to play as many of them as I can so I can write down some specific information I want, which is usually hard to come by on fansites. I'm also going to research the various systems, the companies (insofar as I can) and will probably look into fansites as well. I like to try to take things at several different angles, and do on and off bursts of things.
For example, right now I'm in the process of doing more gaming than anything. But then I'll turn around and spend hours researching something else, looking for opinions or other things. I'm fairly obsessive when I get into things, and like to have as many details as I possibly can so I can present it all.

They're mostly very bland games IMO. I find that very few console RPGs before the market crash of 87 are all that interesting.

Well, even if they are bland, it'll be interesting. I may seem a little nuts, or maybe this is some sort of obsession with me, but when I work on something I really do like to try to go into everything I can. If that means reading article after article or playing game after game, I do it. Also, this way I can substantiate a little better when certain things came into play in console RPGs.
Besides, I'd probably try to play them all anyway, so why not now?

Yeah, I don't see what the problem is. You're interested in those games for whatever reason, so more power to you. I don't see anyone calling Kurt a nutjob for playing through all of those old SMT titles for his article on the series. If nothing else, it could be considered as sort of a history lesson on videogames, with a focus on the console RPG field of research.

Well, I'm just giving you a warning. As a diehard RPG fan, I've actually played every one of these games mentioned and was only able to finish the more popular ones. If you can actually sit through all of them, cool. If nothing else, it might let you further appreciate modern RPGs. Or you might end up like me and thoroughly disillusioned from playing any more RPGs that don't try to personally captivate you.
