I once frequented an arcade that had Martial Masters out for some strange reason. It looked awfully cool, and I have sometimes wondered why I haven't heard more of it. Looking at the other games that ran on the same hardware, a lot of them look pretty nifty but utterly unfamiliar. What's the story here?

No story. The company is Taiwanese and I guess that if Japanese arcade games have a tendency to stay over there, so would Taiwanese games

There are plenty of arcade games people haven't mentioned more of. Martial Masters is pretty well known now among fighting game fans. The PGM and PGM2 are well-known to hardcore beat-em-up fans, of which there are very few.
By the time the PGM really became hot, arcades were already dead here. There are English versions of many of their games but Knights of Valour presumably didn't sell well though so they have a weak western footprint.

The typo in the thread title has me reading this as "marital matters" every time I look at it.

They're arcade games; MAME can play them. Knights of Valour is really, really good. I haven't played much of Oriental Legend; wasn't too impressed and moved on to check out other arcade games.

Yeah, it's too bad a majority of these games aren't emulated well or even fully dumped. IGS's beat-em-ups look superb; combining traditional form with fighting game combos that soar into the hundreds, multiple characters, and high-quality sprites rivaling Capcom and SNK. Not that they were the first to do this-- Denjin Makai 2/Guardians comes to mind (amazing game, btw)-- but they were the last to do it well. It's interesting how many combo vids there are for these games on YouTube. They also made a slick lookin' Metal Slug clone, Demon Front: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0INqGcfCpn4And I'm pretty sure they developed Dodonpachi II: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6prEpp_Fa6cHere's some crappy footage of Oriental Legend 2 for the PGM2: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yv1w-QiS1eM

any really good PMG emulators? Only Martial masters and a few of the beat em ups run ok in MAME Nebula maybe? I dunno, I'm only guessing. And speaking of the PGM games, HG101 is long overdue for articles about IGS' beat-em-ups and fighters. Every single one of them is the kinda game where you play it and think "How is this so obscure?", which is exactly the kinda games that I associate HG101 with. There's another series that needs to be on HG101. Both titles are among the best beat-em-ups EVER, and the first game might even be top 5 in the genre for SNES, which is really saying something.

What's Denjin Makai 1? Cause I don't think that I've ever found that one. Or maybe I've seen/played it under a different name and just don't know it.
And 2/Guardians is indeed really good.

You might've played it. On the SNES it's called Ghost Chaser Densei. From what I've read it's a downgraded port of the arcade original-- half the amount of playable characters, fewer enemies on screen and levels rearranged/cut. Unfortunately, the arcade Denjin Makai 1 has messed up graphics and missing sound in MAME. At least, when I try to play it all I get is a scrambled Banpresto logo and a purple screen. Oh well.

Hmm, the name isn't ringing any bells. I'll have to hunt this down later then.

Yeah, Ghost Chaser Densei may be "downgraded" from the arcade version, but it's still completely awesome. You might wanna play it with a FAQ though, 'cause it's pretty complex for a beat-em-up.

But it didn't occur to me that the hardware wasn't thoroughly emulated at this point. I guess it was perhaps not subjected to the same rigorous hacking techniques as CPS2 or CPS3.

Oriental Legend 2 is pretty amazing. Also, they developed Spectral vs. Generation, an interesting crossover fighting game.
