www.hardcoregaming101.net/citizenx/citizenx.htmI remember reading about this in EGM, especially the clown picture. It was never released, but a beta version cropped up and was eventually "finished" and sold out on the internet. I actually bought a copy of it at a convention but I still haven't played it. From the sound of this review, I probably shouldn't, but some of the stupid FMV scenes sound amusing.

I feel sad for people that made those kind of games. I'm sure most of them were frustrated movie directors that saw CD consoles as their saving grace. Even sadder that they didn't know that a game first has to be fun in order to be good.

The second half of the second paragraph sounds just as a gratuitous rant to me. True, Digital Pictures made only FMV games, a greatly discredited genre (and for a good reason), but please: I know of the Night Trap case, but I fail to find the logic connection. And let's face it: some rating system in the videogame industry would have become necessary sooner or later. Beside this, the article is good, and I agree on the strange circumstance of DP shelving a game that could have been a step forward for them (unless they went out of business when they were about to finish it); after all, the FMV games genre also died because it had become stagnant. The review ends with a link to Sega-16, where there's this interesting article on Tom Zito and Digital Pictures too: sega-16.com/feature_page.php?id=329&title=Developer%27s%20Den:%20Digital%20PicturesZito's personal way to the future of gaming proved to be a wrong one, but at least he followed it with conviction.

Charles Manson also followed his beliefs with conviction

I enjoy Night Trap and Double Switch. Take them as b-movies with fun(often hilarious) trap mechanics, and they're not bad at all. Night Trap has some outright comedy gold moments: "Ooh, homemade cherry popsicles!" "We all have our very special cravings around here."

Aww, man. I really like FMV games as a genre - actually, I love FMV games. Games can do many things, but if I'm in the mood to be entertained (as opposed to mentally taxed, saddened, whatever), then FMV games are right at the top of the list. Games like Snow Job on the 3DO were actually technically quite accomplished in terms of detective-like gameplay. And I don't mean in a so bad it's good way. I mean I honest to god, sincerely enjoy watching the footage and then shooting the zombies, or working out the puzzles, or doing whatever is called for. It's like the film Tremors. Or Big Trouble in Little China. Or Escape from LA (which is ridiculous). They're so unabashedly over the top and flamboyant. So crazy. Heck, I even get a kick out of seeing the footage lose most of its colour value, being downscaled. True fact: when I visited Japan, the number 1 game I wanted to buy was "the FEAR", a 4 DVD FMV extravaganza on the PS2. Also the last FMV game ever developed for consoles I believe... After O Story? At least I don't know of any that followed. Sorry, I don't want to criticise your work, I just wanted to say that there are a few of us who genuinely get satisfaction from playing FMV games. I'm sorry the genre died - with today's Blue-Ray's the film footage would be amazing.

I know the article is harsh, but I stand by it. I have never enjoyed them. I used to play them all the time with my uncle's Sega CD and I can't recall ever having that much fun with them. Even recently playing a few again (namely Night Trap, Fahrenheit, and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) and it still didn't do anything for me.
I do however enjoy them a bit more now as I am older, if only for the bad acting and scenes. So I do agree with you at least with the whole over the top aspect, and Citizen X is no different. I was just mostly fascinated by the fact that it was a Digital Pictures game that wasn't an FMV and therefore felt it had some merit for mention.

I remember reading interviews with Tom Zito back in the day in Next Generation magazine (back when it was still good) and the guy always struck me as a pretentious douche who acted like he was the greatest video game developer. Last I heard, he left the game industry after Digital Pictures and formed some audio equipment company.

sketcz: Good luck if you do that. There's probably a lot of unheard of FMV games. Anyway, that pic isn't so bad since everything is covered. It's rather artistic actually. And btw I gotta ask, who is your icon of? Looks like an old west photo I've seen.

I was tempted to link to a photo where nothing was covered - but decided against it! They're on his site though. I also realised, I've not played any laserdisc FMV games. This site has a fairly good list, but he's missing all the Japanese-only releases: fmvworld.com/games.htmlI wasn't aware of that some films came with FMV games built in, most cool! As for my avatar - I found it by googling moustache. I wanted something that evoked images of colonial adventurers. I use either that one, or one of Boer Guerrillas.

So yeah, I have loved this site for a long time, but for some reason I never bothered to join the forum, an oversight I have now fixed.
So, I was reading the new article on Citizen X, and I get to the bottom, and, no...
...It couldn't be....
It's a link to my review of this game! Yes, I'm the writer of that Sega-16 review! Thanks for the mention, Paul!
Looking back on Citizen X, I realize that it was an incredibly frustrating game. I'm surprised I didn't blow a gasket trying to blow up that Clown Car at the circus, or losing a ton of lives fighting the bomb-juggling clowns, or getting blown up by those clow-mimes.
But I still stand by the idea that Digital Pictures deserves praise for the attempt, an "A for effort," as I put it. Maybe if they had attempted more games with gameplay as well as FMV, they might have survived to this day (A horrible thought to most of you, I'm sure.), or at least a little longer. Even though it's not a wonderful game, at least it's a game, making it the best of their products by default.
Thanks again,
Arjak (Collin Pierce)

At least I don't know of any that followed. If you didn't manage to track it down, pay whatever you need to so you can get a copy. I hate FMV games and I find the game fascinating, so I imagine if you actually like FMV games this would be pretty much perfect. I found a sealed copy for like 900 yen a few years back, so of course I picked it up, still have it. It seems they go for a bit more now, I have seen used copies for around 2000-3000 yen.
