Actually, those are just costumes. It's not really Arthur, Chun Li, Phoenix Wright or Jill Valentine.

Pretty cool nonetheless. Also, by "Phoenix Wright", you mean Apollo Justice/Housuke Odoroki from Gyakuten Saiban 4?

I'm trying to dig deeper in the ghouls n ghost console ports primarily focusing on the Saturn/PS1 and PS2/XBOX versions. From the information I've found on the web I'm hearing that the Saturn version is considered the most faithful translation next to the arcade game of the late 80's? I know the Saturn was a great 2D system so does this mean the PS1 capcom compilation is weaker than the Saturn version? I believe the XBOX/PS2 Capcom compilations took the same source code of the PS1/Saturn versions yet offer slightly higher resolutions. So which console version is the most faithfully translated next to the arcade version?

After mentioning this, it shows the following screenshot of Red Arremer carrying off the Princess. So, yeah, you did miss something.

As far as I know, the Saturn and PSOne versions are more or less identical. The compilations use the same source code, although it MAY run in a higher resolution - which is actually kinda bad, because it usually means they're upscaled and filtered.
The only one of these compilations I have to test is the PSOne version that has Commando and Mercs, though

Somebody on some message board mentioned that the PS1 version has dimmed backgrounds compared to the Saturn version but its probably not night and day to notice. I hear the X68000 version is very good although the best way to play it would probably be through MAME emulator.

The X68000 ports are usually about as close as arcade perfect as you could get during the time...but yeah, MAME is probably the best way regardless.
Any visual differences between the PSOne and Saturn versions are probably just due to how the systems output video.

Cute! I like how, while the "social" areas are in full 3D, the actual fighting takes place with a 2D gameplay.
I recall an online GnG game being in development and then canceled several year ago, but all I saw was a (very bland) screenshots on a magazine and the mention of that project once existing.

I found two Ghost's 'n Goblins clones that would make an interesting addition to the article. Belial - hol.abime.net/5318The Sword & The Rose (aka: Prince Clumsy) - hol.abime.net/2243

Those aren't clones, they are blatant ripoffs!

Makaimura was also ported to NEC PC-8801 by ASCII: And well, it's quite noticeable for being an ugly port. Other than the HW limits so that it looks even worse in motion and some missing event SFXs (so for example it doesn't do any sound if you kill a crow or take a statue bonus, which is quite bogus if also the collisions are nowhere near to be perfect) there are also very erratic physics and an amusing "bug" involving the same weapon currently in your possession dropped from the enemies. And this description is just from a bunch of quick playthroughs, really can't stand in playing it more than five minutes.
