kimimi: I've seen those kinds of reviews and dislike them a great deal - I've always championed imports, especially if those without any knowledge can play them with some perseverance. Sometimes it can be a fun challenge working out the menus. kobushi: Thanks for the info! I missed that bit about the mosque and temple, and would like to use it verbatim. So unless your adamant against it, I'll put Kobushi at the top alongside the fellow who helped me with screens. The game is perhaps less controversial than I first imagined. (well, apart from the "Hail Hitler" NPC - that was weird and out of place).

Well, I got to the same place, and I'm stuck. I got the elixir, but no alembic. A little Googling turned up two Japanese threads discussing this issue (one of them was the thread you quoted earlier, Sketcz). Apparently no one has found the alembic in the PC88 version. There were various theories, ranging from buggy code to a devious copy protection scheme, or simply that the alembic is found in a previous area which is now inaccessible. For me, two things in particular stick out: 1) Not all the chests can be opened in the eastern cave on Faros (i.e., the repeating cave with the torch by the door and the three-headed boss who drops the sulfur (イオウ)). Maybe the alembic is in one of these chests? 2) One of the townspeople says that there are three monsters living on Faros, but there are only two caves with two bosses. So maybe there is another cave? (Unless the third monster is supposed to be the thing living in the lake...) At any rate, I think this is as far as I'm going to play. I get the feeling that the PC88 version may be unwinnable.

No problem, thank you for all the effort. The Faros cave, with the torch, I found I could open all the chests, but only on my first journey through. Once you get to the repeating door bit, I did some more exploring in it and found they wouldn't open, so reloaded my save to before entering the boss door and, unless I'm remembering wrongly, was able to open them all. Nothing interesting inside. Just cocaine and stuff. Anyway, if it's unwinnable, that's kind of awesome in an awful way. That's true 1980s computer gaming - glitches which render it unfinishable. Pity, since the scrolling, overhead maps and combat are better in the PC88 than MSX version, though the MSX has better backgrounds. I'll condense all of this into my write up. Thanks again!

I've almost finished this. Does anyone have access to the PCE manuals to see if WD did their usual thing of including localisation notes?
Also, I've emailed Vic, so hopefully we get some inside info.

Thanks. Turns out they didn't.
