I grabbed the English one when it was released a few months back through less legal means. It's...not much better than the fourth one.

The Simon the Sorcerer article in the CGA book has more information on 5 than this one. Even if 5 isn't very good, it needs to be covered in the article!

This was one of the cases where the book article was updated, but hasn't been woven back into the site. Of course, it's been nearly two years (!!), so perhaps that should be in order.
I had higher hopes for Simon 5, and, uh...yeah. :\

Man, I loved the first two Simon the Sorcerer games, espeically the 2nd one. That snarky british tone and those lush pixel graphics...good times.
I owned the third one. The minute it started and it gave me a tutorial (tutorial?? in an adventure game??) on how to do action sequences and platforming...I knew it was doomed.
I didn't even know there was a 5. Heck, I didn't even know there was a 4! I guess it's a good thing I wasn't aware. Shame the series seems to be doomed forever now.

The long and the short of it is that a German developer obtained the rights from...whoever held them last, and made their own games without any of the original staff. (IIRC, I think the Woodroffe clan may have been listed as consultants or something like that, but their influence was never felt at all.) Apparently it wasn't THAT alienating for a German audience since they managed to get back the same voice from the first three games. But the English translations were dire - they clearly had no budget, the scripts needed some vital editing to put in the funny, and the voice acting was uniformly terrible. Most importantly it was missing the British voice actors, as well as that style of humor - it was like watching a Monty Python skit re-enacted with the cast of Friends.
What they did to Swamp was horrible. One of my favorite side characters in an adventure game, his character arc from the first to second game is remarkably absurd.
