www.hardcoregaming101.net/atlantis/atlantis.htmThis is Imagic's 2600 title. I think I had this! Or maybe Demon Attack. Or possible both. Anyway, the article covers four games - Atlantis, it's kinda-sequel Cosmic Ark, Atlantis II, which is more of a ROM hack, and a Zellers rip off version.

Interestingly, although I am not certain about Atlantis, I DO quite clearly recall playing Cosmic Ark as a child. I don't think I ever did very well, enjoyed watching my brothers more, but those little creatures always amused me. I remember them, and the ship, the best.

I loved Atlantis and Cosmic Ark as a kid! Great games!

The Inty version of Atlantis is good stuff. One thing not mentioned in the article is that it's possible to bring out and control the space ship (button 8 on the key pad brings it out, if I remember correctly).

Sweet. This makes me want to see more Imagic articles. Riddle of the Sphinx, Laser Gates and Fathom, anyone?
How about a few comparison screenshots? I don't think I've ever seen the Intellivision Atlantis before.
Also: Cosmic Ark is awesome. I just felt the need to throw that out here.

One thing I noticed: the screencaps aren't labeled for which console version they're from.

Whoa, didn't even notice this went live. @ dire51: I wanted so badly to get comparison screens, but it was a nightmare trying to get my ageing mac to emulate these games at all, let alone correctly. The intellivision version in particular, emulated at some screwy resolution that was entirely playable, but nowhere near accurate. The home computer versions were even worse. Sadly, these kinds of problems mean I might have to be a little more choosy about my next game. As much as I'd love to do Demon Attack, that game came out for fucking everything, vastly multiplying the problems I had with this article. edit... If you just want to see some comparison screens... www.mobygames.com/game/atlantis/screenshots

Sorry to hear about your computer issues, Jave. I'm all too familiar with them, so I feel your pain.
Thanks for the link!

I'm curious about this statement:
"The second [game variation] is the same, but with the centre turret permanently disabled."
The third game variation also seems to have a disabled centre turret. What I'm wondering is: is the centre turret still THERE, or do you start with one less structure (and to effect, "hit point") than you do in variations 1 and 4, or does a useless turret or new building replace it?

Good question. I actually had to go back and play a couple rounds in order to check.
Yeah, in games 2 and 3, the centre turret is still there, and it's still the first target the aliens go after, it just doesn't fire.
Edit, and in the O2, Vic-20 and Intellivision games, it's replaced by a useless structure.

Hey, thanks! I think they made the right call by leaving it in like that. I can only assume the port teams thought the same, as the Atari version leaving in the gun might have simply been the programmer(s) taking the easy way out.
Edited because the programmer thing occurred to me.

Edit, and in the O2, Vic-20 and Intellivision games, it's replaced by a useless structure. That "useless structure" is where the "space ship" I mentioned earlier in the thread is launched from in the Intellivision version. Here's a video showing the UFOFrom my previous post (which is the third reply in this thread):

Oh, okay.
I'll tool around with that sometime today and see if I can shimmy a mention into the article.

update (sorry for the bump)
I've tried to get the UFO to come out, and it just isn't working. Out of about 6 games, it came up once, and immediately dropped back down, and I'm not entirely sure what I did differently that one time. It's probably my emulator.
Could you perhaps describe how it works/controls a little bit? Maybe we could work out a short paragraph and have Kurt add that in between the last two paragraphs of the Atlantis entry.

Could you perhaps describe how it works/controls a little bit? Maybe we could work out a short paragraph and have Kurt add that in between the last two paragraphs of the Atlantis entry. Doh. It comes out with the 0 key, not the 8 on the keypad. After the 0 is pressed it's controllable with the disc with the top button for firing missiles to the left and the bottom button for firing missiles to the right. The number under the middle structure is the timer for the ship. It goes down while the UFO is out, further down when the UFO is hit and the UFO is destroyed when goes to 0 (though the cannons still operate and the UFO will return if cities are still intact when the level ends). The UFO can return to the middle base by landing on it and the timer charges up while the UFO is in the base. This is one game I wish I had the manual and overlays for. I didn't know the UFO could come out when I first played and the buttons for choosing difficulty are non standard.
