Interesting how this series is sometimes attributed to Earnest instead of Annet, even though Annet is the lead in 2 of the games. Great games and fair reviews. An Arcus one would be pretty interesting IMO; the series is hardly covered enough enough in English, esp. the original computer versions.
Anyway, thought the boss patterns in Anet Futatabi were some of the easiest in any beat-em-up. And normal enemies are a joke if you just let the super meter charge to a decent attack before each large wave. The 0-invincibility on wakeup was pretty annoying though.

Nice article, there is something intriguing about Telenet/Wolf Team games. I have all the PC Engine Valis games, and they're a lot of fun.
I for one would love to see an Arcus article here, I think it would be perfect for this site as there isn't a lot of info out there on these games.

The big problem I had with Arcus is that I can't find any information on it, even in Japanese. With some of the more obscure Falcom stuff, I could at least use some Japanese fansites or Wikipedia to reference, but there's nothing that I could dig up. The only thing were two reviews that used to be on Shadatannis.com and are now on Honestgamers.com.

Correct, but he did refer to him/it and the king in yellow more than a couple of times and it's generally considered as a part of his mythos.
Edit: And according to Wikipedia he borrowed the name from Ambrose Bierce, specifically his short stories “An Inhabitant of Carcosa” and “Haita the Shepherd”.

I've never played the series, but I never get why people call Annet Futatabi "Annet Again", when "Annet Returns" is a more accurate translation. Was it some official "Engrish" title mentioned in the packaging or something? Its stupid either way.

Just played El Viento, and it's awesome so far. It feels kinda low-budget and strangely coded, but for some reason this makes it better? The boss battle where you're on those log things that break when you stand on them or shoot them is genius (it's the 2nd one).

I've played El Viento and was most impressed by the game's fun factor. The game isn't too bad, but as was stated elsewhere, the last level is a bit insane. Great cinemas and the background story given in the manual at least manages to flesh things out.
That said, I've played a bit of Earnest Evans, only owning a loose cartridge, but from my understanding the game was pitched in the US as a sequel to El Viento- supposedly taking place in the 1980s with the titular Earnest Evans being the grandson of the original. The pics from the Mega CD version seem to refute that, especially since the Genesis version has no real storyline with in the game itself.

In the article it states "It's very similar to the midboss in the Chill Penguin stage in Mega Man X" It should read Spark Mandrill stage instead.

Er... this is pretty weird. I could've sworn I'd claimed WolfTeam's games awhile ago. The first part of the article, which is almost done, was going to include Yaksa, Gaudi, Axis and Sol-Feace/Deace, and the second part was going to include the Arcus series, which I've already started on. I was also working on El Viento and its two follow ups as well. Do you not want me to do this now?

Gigantic nitpick: While The King in Yellow was published in 1895, the character Hastur is first mentioned in an Ambrose Bierce short story from a few years prior (Haita the Shepherd). Afterwards, while Lovecraft was surely a fan of Chambers' and Bierce's writings, he only ever mentions the name Hastur once. After his death, however, August Derleth worked the name into his somewhat-questionable solidification of a "Cthulhu Mythos." Costmetically and even in setting, the Hastur in El Viento is absolutely based on this later use of the name rather than on the benevolent god of shepherds in Bierce's story or the starfaring deity of guidance in Chambers' anthology.

Oh August, how we Lovecraftian scholars loathe to love thee, and love to loathe thee. It is ironic how the man that almost single handedly saved the tales from fading into obscurity could have missed the point so much.

Yeah, Derleth sucks... Chambers's 'King in Yellow' is a brilliant book, by the way, but it's almost never published in its full form, because most publishers only want the famous horror stories from it.
It's kind of weird, actually, that Chambers used to be a huge bestselling author, but now he's only remembered for about 2 short stories ('Repairer of Reputations' being the other one). Of course it's his own fault for the most part, as he pretty much 'sold out' and started writing whatever crap was popular at the time. He could have been an amazing writer, and I guess was for a little while, but there's so much missed potential...

I have your notes from awhile ago but it didn't have it down as "officially claimed" since there was other stuff on your plate. Uh, skip the Earnest Evans stuff then. Go for broke on the others though.
