www.hardcoregaming101.net/freq/freq.htmFrequency was one of those games I always saw at Kay Bee for $10 and never bought. I did my Amplitude when that was marked down, but I didn't get into the music. Now that I've heard some of the Frequency music clips, I might see if I can track that down - it still seems pretty cheap and common. Anyway, for those who don't know - Frequency and Amplitude were made by Harmonix before they went on to Karaoke Revolution, Guitar Hero and Rock Band. It's similar to Beatmania except you're mixing several different tracks of music instead of just one that combines them all together.

I have a funny story about Frequency, I've had to purchase it over five times. It's a favorite among me, my brothers and all my friends. However, after owning it for two months about every single time, it'd mysteriously disappear, never to be seen again.

I've never liked rhythm games, but it's cool to see the genre get more representation here.

I first played Frequency on a Sony variety demo disc at a PS2 kiosk. I played the Fear Factory track, got hooked on it, and went on to buy a PS2 solely for that game and Xenosaga.
I never was able to finish it on Expert until well after Amplitude came out.
Sucks that we'll never get another game in the series, but at least everyone knows who Harmonix is now.

Shame on the guys who put the Frequency band bios together. I just noticed a severely glaring error:
"Fear Factory have been together since 1998."
Wrong. FF's been together since '90. I know the bio listed is a direct quote from Frequency, but I felt the need to point out the error.

I heard somewhere that Harmonix is coming out with an Amplitude-like game for the iPod that generates the rhythm pods through the song you're playing on your playlist. I'll post a link if I find one. Edit: It's already out. Shit! : phasegame.com/

I guess I should've mentioned that, as an afterthought... if you want to update the ending with a link to it or something, Kurt, it's cool by me. (I've got no iPod, unfortunately, so I don't have a means to actually try it.)
Also, never would've about known the Fear Factory mixup. Makes sense that they'd been around longer than that.

I could pick up Phase in the next couple weeks and add it to the article if you want. Do you mind, cj?

The guys that wrote them should have verified their facts before publishing them. One would think they should have, anyway.

I can't help but think that if Fear Factory weren't involved, you wouldn't have commented on this game. ;D Seriously, I really have to pick these games up. I am a veritable addict to Guitar Hero, but I do have an ear for catchy techno, which this game delivers in spades. I hope they get to make a third game in this vein, and the absolute final boss should be "Thousand" by Moby.

Kind of late, but I realized I forgot to mention Amplitude's 'expansion'.
P.O.D.'s third-to-last album, their self-titled one, came with a bonus disk that was a single-song 'demo' for Amplitude. A bonus P.O.D. song which was actually pretty difficult.
Haven't played it in a while, but it's worth tracking down for fans and someone after an extra challenge.

This article was a little dry and long-winded for my tastes, almost bordering on FAQ-style explanation of gameplay details, but it was interesting to learn about Harmonix's early days.
Too bad the soundtracks don't appeal to me whatsoever, though. I'm not a big fan of rhythm games to begin with (breaking another female gamer stereotype, I guess), but I've always preferred how the Japanese-developed games often have original music for the games, written by general game composers working for the companies. I especially like when they have songs from other games like how Konami includes remixes of tunes from a lot of their classic series. Granted, sometimes Japanese rhythm games go the licensed music route as well, using a bunch of j-pop and crap, so that's just as bad.
