More retro than most HG101 content, but that's not a bad thing at all: hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/berzerkfrenzy/berzerkfrenzy.htmThey still have one of these at Hershery Park in Pennsylvania. It was on free play when I was there over the summer. Anyway, the digitized speech is awesome (I constructed a sound file based off the MAME samples) and I really, really dig the artwork for the Atari ports. I had the 2600 version growing up and it wasn't until just now that I realized that the big round orb that's prominent on the cover is actually the robot's shoulder. I've never seen the 5200 artwork but something about it is unspeakably rad.

Two of the greatest games ever made. Awesome!
Also, yeah, it would be cool to see more older games at HG101.
Oops! I forgot to mention that you can stop enemy lasers by shooting them with your own. Might be worth putting a sentence into the paragraph about advanced techniques that mentions that.

Yeah, great article, ZZZ. It was a pleasure editing it. Personally, I'm going to look out for the Colecovision version of Frenzy on your recommendation. It's a shame the Vectrex Berzerk wasn't any good. I had high hopes in picking that up since I got my system.

Others might disagree, but I found it to be total and absolute crappola.

Very nice really old retro video gaming.
PS: Kurt, is ZZZ an HG101 49% shareholder already or what?

Evil Otto, by the way, is the best damn villain in video game history. Hell, in any area. They still have one of these at Hershery Park in Pennsylvania. It was on free play when I was there over the summer. Holy shit! You could just walk up to it and start playing? I'll have to keep that in mind if, by chance, I ever find myself there in the future.

Yeah, Hershey Park's arcades have quite possibly the best selection that I've ever seen. It's kinda odd, but, yeah.

Cool article. I love both games. One thing of note about the 2600 version is that it has game selections that affect the extra life score and whether or not Otto can be destroyed. There is a copy of the manual complete with a game selection chart here. They still have one of these at Hershery Park in Pennsylvania. It was on free play when I was there over the summer. Cool. I saw Berzerk at Hershey Park too, but it wasn't working when I was there. They had a working Heavy Unit and Q*Bert's Qubes last time I was there, though. They also have a nice selection of pinball as well as video games. I played Atari's Hercules last time I was there. A huge machine with a pool ball instead of a standard pinball. It's an interesting novelty, but the actual game play isn't too hot due to the physics of the pool ball.

Yeah that Hercules was cool to play as a novelty, but that ball is just way too heavy to go anywhere. I tried to play the Q*Bert games but I didn't play close enough attention to the instructions so I was at a loss at what I was supposed to be doing. I ended up wishing they just had the original Q*Bert.
But yeah, they had Dragon's Lair, Shinobi, Bad Dudes, Double Dragon, tons of stuff. Also, a sitdown version of Choplifter, even though it's exactly the same as the SMS version. They also had an After Burner sitdown cab, but it was busted.

Still playable, though. They also had this unique sitdown cab of 1942. I also played Rolling Thunder and Golden Axe when I was there. Good stuff. I played some Indiana Jones in the Temple of Doom too.

Also some Frenzy variants, as it was also released for the Spectrum Sinclair

Nice article on one of my favorites from eons ago, it seems. Did anyone notice that the Frenzy section is still listed as Berzerk? Anyone here ever hear about a version of Berzerk for the 2600 that features the voices from the arcade, entitled Berzerk Voice Enhanced? It was created by Mike Mika and released for the VCS in 2002. He also reworked the game so it more closely resembles the original arcade game. You can download it here: www.videogamearchive.com/emu/a26_hack.htm Also: when they were younger, my daughters had a dark orange happy face pillow, which I promptly named Otto.

I was well aware of those games. No matter how blatant they are in their plagarism, they aren't technically the same games, so I opted not to bother with those.

I don't know, those sound like interesting additions to the article. Nothing major - maybe just a screenshot or two, describing what it is and how it's different, if at all. It'd work for a "related game" type of thing.
I had Shoot Out for the Atari 400...still have the cart/manual around here, actually. For some reason I never connected it it with the Berzerk. The controls were stupid though, and the bad guys would leave behind debris that killed you.
