www.hardcoregaming101.net/longestjourney/longestjourney.htmMeant to post this awhile ago, but kept forgetting. The first game, The Longest Journey, was one of the last great point n click adventures from around the turn of the century. Its sequel, Dreamfall, is completely 3D and often feels like a totally different game, even though the world and characters are very closely intertwined. Both are excellent, though my preferences fall towards Dreamfall, even though it's really only half a game (and who knows when the other half is coming, if ever.)

After this long slog through the history of adventure games this site's been doing for the past few months, I'm really glad to see my personal favorite entries in the adventure genre finally get some attention. I'm almost embarrassed to say, but Longest Journey was the first classical adventure game I'd ever played, and it's made visiting games before it a bit difficult. Dreamfall I went into with an immense amount of hesitence, but I ended up loving it just the same. I don't think writing and atmosphere combine more effectively in any other games.

Dreamfall is such a beautiful game. And I love a good modern setting.

Dreamfall is such a beautiful game. And I love a good modern setting. Well, the character models are hideous. The way Zoe and some other characters' eyes move around makes them look like puppets. But the environments sure are gorgeous. Nothing beats revisiting April's old school town in tattered, grimey disarray (whoops, spoilers).

I've seen people complain about the characters before, but I dunno...I thought the character modeling was DAMN good for such a low budget game, enough that I could forgive the robotic animation.
I first played Dreamfall back when it came out but hadn't played The Longest Journey. The whole second chapter takes on an entirely new feeling one you're familiar with Venice.

The characters are rather attractive though I think April looks kind of silly in Dreamfall. Still waiting on that damn sequel so I can stop crying myself to sleep. Maybe mention that you can optionally re-activate the monkey for extra saddness in the ending.

That second chapter damn near made me shit myself. Going through what I remembered as April's homely, pleasant boarding house having become a sickly, twisted shithole like something out of Silent Hill has to be one of the greatest gaming moments of the last generation for me.

TLJ touched a nerve back in my head somewhere.
The main character somehow had the exact same name (April Ryan) and vocation (Art Student) as a character I'd been roleplaying in a Changeling : The Dreaming campaign at the time, but of course, I did not find this out until after I'd purchased the game.
Just one of those... "How did THIS happen?" moments, y'know?
