www.hardcoregaming101.net/syndicate/syndicate.htmThis sim/action/RTS game has something of a brilliant concept - playing as an evil corporation trying to take over the work - although it's really more action than strategy. Cool atmosphere, though. They were both developed at the height of Bullfrog's greatness before it was gutted and left to die, per EA's agenda in the late 90s.

I recall trying to get Syndicate Wars to work on my PC but having some trouble. Did you run it under XP?
Syndicate was a great game though, poor Bullfrog they gave us PC gamers so much.

Loved the original Syndicate on PC. Never could get into Syndicate Wars, though.

You just sold me on this game, dude. I'd known about it for some time, but never gotten around to trying it out before. Is the SNES version (the easiest one for me to find) good enough to compare to the PC release or should I not even bother?
BTW, is this the first RTS game covered on the site?

I recall trying to get Syndicate Wars to work on my PC but having some trouble. Did you run it under XP? With DOSBox, yeah. It runs a bit sluggish but playable under VGA. SVGA was right out of the question, though. You just sold me on this game, dude. I'd known about it for some time, but never gotten around to trying it out before. Is the SNES version (the easiest one for me to find) good enough to compare to the PC release or should I not even bother? BTW, is this the first RTS game covered on the site? Honestly I wouldn't bother with the 16-bit console ones. They just feel so radically different from the PC ones that it's almost entirely ineffectual. I can't think offhand of any other RTS-es on the site, so it might be the first.

Yeah I used Dosbox but hey my computer is better now so maybe I'll give it another shot. To be fair though Z isn't exactly a traditional RTS either.

Are you sure the 3DO version supports the mouse?

There's a badly-corrupted version floating around that won't run in DOSBox. I've been meaning to sort it out for a while now.

Are you sure the 3DO version supports the mouse? Apparently it doesn't! For some reason I assumed that it did, I guess I got it confused with Syndicate Wars. I actually have a 3DO mouse lying around here somewhere but I don't have anything that supports it.

I need to fire up Syndicate Wars again and give it another shot. I always thought it was pretty snazzy, if not quite up to snuff with the first game. At least it wasn't a trainwreck like American Revolt. Fuck American Revolt. Syndicate Wars works like a charm in DOSbox @ 640x480 on pretty much anything remotely modern. Like jorpho said, the problems people are having typically relate to that one fucked up version that's been floating around on the internet for years and years. I just ripped a disc image and will upload it here in a bit for anyone interested. edit - because I love ya'll, here you go. I like to mount it in Daemon Tools and then set DOSbox to just mount the virtual drive as a...er..virtual drive. Makes it easier to swap discs in and out without having to edit the dosbox.conf Should work without any problems in a default install of the latest DOSbox, but if ya'll run into any problems, just holler.

Sounds good, I'd definitely be interested. Though that's partially because I don't know what became of the files I had >_<

www.hardcoregaming101.net/syndicate/syndicate.htmNice article. I was never mad about the original Syndicate and I find myself in complete agreement - despite its near-legendary status and its merits, it wasn't a masterpiece and hasn't aged well, and a lot of its difficulty was due to interface quirks. I remember Syndicate Wars getting a much more tepid reception back in '97. Some errors and typos I spotted: - The Persuadertron is constantly called "Persuadatron" - "and since this is a European game, the fact that the whole world seems to drive on the left side of the road" --> You meant to say "British"? In the rest of Europe, we drive right side. - "hovercars, who drive" --> "which" - "to do you bidding" --> "your" - "the only version of Syndicate release in Japan" --> "released" - "Cereberus IFF robotic guardian" --> "Cerberus"? - Halo was released in 2001 and not 2000. I've recently read there were plans for a CD version where the billboards in cities would have showed several FMVs stored in the disc, but it didn't came to be - AFAIK, Syndicate Plus is only a bundle of the original game and American Revolt, with no further enhancements.

The original article said British...dunno why I changed that.
As for the FMVs, you're thinking of Syndicate Wars, which did have a few short movies for the billboards, like ads for Ghost in the Shell.
