Replaying the game just right now and now that I got the hang of its quirks, it's not that bad. It's actually quite fun. They could have fix the hit detection a bit, but things don't really get that cheap until the third stage. I can get through the first two stages in one life, but the platform jumping sections in Scene 3 is what ruins my performance. I learn that you can maintain your balance in the moving rocks if you don't swing your sword too much. I actually managed to get to Captain Silver after a bit of credit feeding, but then I quit during the second loop since I used one continue to get to him and I want a pure one credit clear.

I think it's hilarious that you read a review saying "this game is masochistically difficult" and then you decide not only to beat it but 1CC it, no matter how uninteresting the game appears it may be.
You are like the Jason X of 1CCs!

Well, someone already made a 1LC playthrough on Niconico, so a 1CC can't be that hard. The game is generous with your extra lives, especially considering some enemies drop changeable letters (like the pistol-wielding pirates and the arrow-shooting natives) that helps you fill out the "CAPTAIN SILVER" gauge in the bottom of the screen quicker. Not to mention you can use your points to purchase extra lives and other power-ups. You can also destroy projectiles when you wield the longsword.

Replayed Captain Silver again. I actually got as far as to Scene 2 of the second loop in one credit. I actually reached the true final boss as well as after continuing, but I didn't want to spoil myself from the ending, so I quit at that point.
Here's another tip: You can permanently keep your longsword for the rest of your current life if you pick a second one while already wielding one. Some of the longswords are hidden within the stage by striking certain spots (like the yellow bell and the Jolly Roger flag in Scene 2). Apparently the same can be done with the boots according to the Japanese flier, but I never done it myself.
The respawn spots in Scene 2 are also a bit cheap. You need to keep an eye on the barrels, because that's where most of the knife-wielding pirates come from.

I've just 1CCed Captain Silver. It's not that hard of a game at all. It's all about memorization. Kurt was just overreacting to the game's difficulty. It's easier than the arcade versions of Ghosts 'n Goblins and Ghouls 'n Ghosts on their default settings if you ask me (a series which Captain Silver is often compared with, even though I don't see much similarities aside for the whole "beat two loops to see the true ending"). I did lose plenty of lives though and I didn't get a very high final score since I used my points to purchase extra men and power-ups in Scene 3 during both loops, but it took less than an hour to actually beat it and I had six lives remaining when I did it. I'm guessing I'm just "hardcore and devoted to the ultimate craft of video gaming".
