www.hardcoregaming101.net/xanth/xanth.htmI've already been covering a good number of Sierra and Lucasarts games, but I've been wanting to go over Legend's titles for awhile now. While one of their text adventures is already featured on the site (Eric the Unready) this is the first of their point n click games, based off of Pierce Anthony's Xanth series. I'm only vaguely familiar with the books - I tried reading them when I was a kid and they didn't click - I read up on the book at the local library to get some comparisons between the original story and the game. The integration is clever, at least.

Ah, now here's something interesting. I was pretty heavy into the book series as a kid, but looking back, it was nothing special. I'd heard that the game was pretty bad...

Yes, I've been meaning to do Superhero League of Hoboken for a while now. I'm not too late, am I? I did reserve it in that other thread. (And if odd Legend games are your thing, there's still Death Gate and Shannara.)

Still got you down for it! I played a bit of it when I saw it used the same engine as Xanth. It's intensely amusing because I grew up (and still live in) North Jersey, so seeing all of these real life towns in a video game context brings a smile to my face. Of course, they just use the basic map of NJ and pick up names, so there's no REAL relation, but it's still cool.
Like Quest for Glory, it straddles the line between adventure and RPG, but seems to lie a bit more on the RPG side. I only played a bit and it didn't really click with me, but the humor is pretty well done.
Also, I've grabbed copies of Shannara and Death Gate, as well as Blackstone Chronicles and Mission Critical. Those are up next once I finish writing up Callahan's Crosstime Saloon (which is excellent).

The PC Gamer I'm scanning right now has a three page preview and I think I may have scanned the review in already. Might have something about it in some other magazines, too.

Yes, please! I saw the review of CCS in one of the PC Gamers I got in a lot recently, but an archive of anything from any magazine about Legend would be great. There's one fantastic fan site that has scans of old Sierra stuff, I've always loved reading about how these were viewed back in the day, especially the stuff I was never familiar with.

Here's the three page preview from PC Gamer: I'll dig through some more magazines over the next few days. I'd be making way better progress if I hadn't gotten addicted to a few choice games (especially San Andreas) and stuff. Just started Assassin's Creed II and I can feel the addiction already seeping in Man, I'm only 80 pages into this issue, too. That's like, maybe a third of the way or something. Checking out these old ads is a blast. edit - huh, auto generated thumbnails aint workin'. Oh well. Links are good. For easy readin', make sure you click on the ol' "View Original Size". I shrunk 'em down by 33% to save on space, but when I build the CBZ of the issue I'll probably leave 'em full res.

Why thank you.
I wish my old scanner(s) were still working, there's a ton of old PC Gamer reviews I'd like to put up. Best I can do is take them to my parent's house and take over their computer...

I wish my old scanner(s) were still working, there's a ton of old PC Gamer reviews I'd like to put up. Best I can do is take them to my parent's house and take over their computer... Thanks to an extremely awesome friend, I've been able to replace most of my stuff I lost in a flood and now I have almost a complete set of PC Gamer from Sep 94 - Dec 03 (and then most of 05 - present). He also hooked me up with his set of Computer Games & Strategy Plus from late 94 - 03, so there's more awesome reading there. Lemme know if there's any specific stuff you need scanned. Alternatively, a few months ago I replaced my all in one printed with an Epson Perfection v30 and I wonder how I ever got along without it. This thing is fucking amazing. Inexpensive, no warm up time, extremely quick scans, and bundled software that doesn't blow. I'd have liked to have gotten a larger flatbed, but the only one in my price range had mixed reviews (I wouldn't have used it for much other than scanning larger game boxes, but I can easily just scan in chunks and merge the images later) edit - you may also enjoy downloading this entire directory of stuff I scanned in while visiting the family back in July. No wheels and not much to do when no one was home, so I wound up just digging through my old game magazines.

I think I can rustle up a scan of a PC Review article on Companions of Xanth. Amusingly, the article's byline writes prominently about how the adventure game is dead and Xanth is the final nail in the coffin.

But...but...Xanth was only released in 1994! It's not a fantastic game but it's not terrible either.
I used to get PC Gamer from roughly 95-97, but I fell out of it once PC gaming progressed beyond my meager 486DX/100, and my father had a nasty tendency to toss out all of the old magazines I'd had, so I've slowly be reaccumlating those, along with all of the ones I'd missed. I guess the only specific stuff I'd be looking for are any old adventure game articles (non-Sierra, since there's already for a site for that - Lucasarts and Legend) and maybe any of their "Best Gamers Ever" features. I've got the ones from both 97 and 98 - I remember how much they loved their System Shock, and how much they got me into it.
