www.hardcoregaming101.net/kidniki/kidniki.htmThis arcade/NES game also got two JP-only sequels for the Famicom, which continuously get further from the original formula, along with a GB game that's pretty good. My fondest recollection of this game comes from a hotel I stayed at years ago on vacation. The arcade there had a Kid Niki machine which was flipped on freeplay. There was a bunch of kids that had gotten to the final boss fight and were trying desperately to kill him, but kept dying. My brother and I tried several times and failed too, so at some point we let the continue timer wind down so we could start anew. A few of the kids there got pissed off that we had given up, but we were sick of constantly dying over and over at the same spot. Even now I have no idea how to beat the final boss in the arcade version. It's weird how you misremember stuff though. I had pictured the final dude as being this huge hideous monstrosity, but playing it again, it's really just a giant kabuki dude who looks like a Simpsons character. I also remember meeting a kid that night claiming that he beat the first Castlevania in one day, the second Castlevania in two, and the third in three. I felt that was highly dubious, especially since, when I was like ten, I hadn't beaten the first Castlevania at all. (And I didn't until like high school.)

I played a couple levels of the GB version some time ago in this unending quest I have to try out every single GB title, but I didn't find it interesting. Does it get better?

Not really. It's a solid if pretty average platformer, but it is much closer to the theme of the original arcade entry than the two Famicom games.

A little-known fact about Kid Niki, on the NES at least (not sure about the arcade) is that it's riddled with secret passages that most people have no clue exists because they're so obscure. There is a YouTube video, at www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSYg67fUpFo, that shows them off. I'm pretty sure there's at least one or two he doesn't show even.

The link I listed had a comma added to it. The right link is: www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSYg67fUpFoConversing with the video's author, it seems unlikely that there are any more secret passages. Still that's a lot, and a surprising amount of programming time that must have gone into them.
