I don't usually play RPGs, because they're mostly filled with tons of random battles and turn-based combats. Anyway, here's my favorite RPGs (in no particular order):
- SD Snatcher - Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes - Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga - Star Ocean 2: The Second Story - Breath of Fire III (lots of turn-based random battles, but I still like this - must be because of the music and overall atmosphere - Suikoden II - Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny - Diablo 2 (with its Expansion Set)

Grandia 1 & 2, with number 2 taking my top spot. The games have got , imo, the most intelligent and rewarding battle system out there... they are also among the elite few RPG's to have held my interest long enough to complete them

I also agree with you about the battle system.

Suikoden 1-3 Xenogears Mother 2 (Earthbound for those who don't know better) Final Fantasy X
I also enjoy the Super Robot Wars games, a series of SRPG's featuring mechs from different anime shows.

Ehhh... can't really say I'm an active RPG fan. However, I do really like Final Fantasies IV and VI, Earthbound, any Super Mario RPG, Phantasy Star, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, and Shin Megami Tensei, even if I did get stuck trying to get the octopus. I swear that it's a glitch in the emulator. Does Landstalker count? ;D

Earthbound, Final Fantasy VIII, Front Mission series, Xenogears, and Tales of Phantasia. If we're talking about computer RPG's instead of console-style, then my list would consist of Ultima VII, Baldur's Gate, Dungeon Siege, Diablo 1, and Morrowind.
