www.hardcoregaming101.net/runaway/runaway.htmI'm not going to officially post this article until the next update, but I figured as may as well put this up. This is an adventure game developed in Spain that initially came out back in 2001, and the third game just came out a few months ago. I was actually looking forward to playing it, just because it had a reputation for being very divisive. As I expected, I fall more on the "hater" side of the equation, although it does get better as the series progresses. I might be a bit harsh on it, but it seems like a lot of adventure game reviews are really forgiving about bad writing. I'm not!

The art for it looks quite gorgeous. And it's great to see coverage on more games that weren't made in the US or Japan. However, it's sad that it sounds as if the game is not all too entertaining.

I liked it, at least until I got to a defective disc.

It seems like a good chunk of wasted potential was at the crux of these games. Oh well, still an interesting examination! I find it particularly interesting how the protagonist starts out looking like Hank Hill but changes drastically between games.

"Igor: Objetivo Uikokahonia" not translated in English? There is an English version, I got it from HOTU years ago. The game must have been released at least in the UK.

Yeah now that I'm looking around, apparently it was translated into English. Still gotta find what its English title is, though.

"Igor: Objective Uikokahonia" By the way, if you want a _really_ bad adventure game, go for "Stupid Invaders". You won't regret it. No, wait, you'll regret it a lot.

That's the first time EVER I hear someone speaking so lowly of it. I personally thought it was a pretty standard, ok-ish adventure. Definitely well worth the 1 buck I spent for a sealed copy.

Reading these reviews almost makes me want to check them out based on some of the crap people are mentioning.
It's interesting knowing that Spain has produced more games than the two Torrente games (based on a really tasteless movie series about a bigoted, ostensibly cheese-sweating cop), one of which you can find for about a dollar at most Half Price Books.

The divisiveness is the reason I wanted to play them too, just to see for myself. They're not completely WRETCHED (although parts of them are) but anyone comparing them to Lucasarts games has no idea what they're talking about.
I bought one of those Torrente games when I was in Spain. I didn't even know it was a movie until I looked it up. Apparently it's awful but it was only a euro and a half, so.
There's a couple of modern Spanish studios doing stuff. Like the guys who made Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ, and a 3D-ish version for Wiiware, along with Arkedo, who's doing a bunch of indie games for Xbox Live. And then there's the guys who did Jericho and are working on the new Castlevania.

Don't forget Pyro Studios (Commandos series, Praetorians, Imperial Glory; unfortunately their latest production is the Planet 51 tie-in). Also Dinamic, a prolific developer and disitributor through the '80s and '90s - but the latter aspect proved to absorb too much resources and led to the company's bankruptcy almost a decade ago. Interestingly FX Interactive, who has become famous here as a distributor of quality budget games at no more than 19.90 Euros of price (like Sacred, the Imperivm series and yes, Runaway too - when the second episode was released, it also had the first one as a homage), often better packaged than bigger productions, was founded by some former Dinamic employees.

I found out about the movies through the first game (which is based on the first two movies). The first movie is actually a really funny black comedy, but there's a pretty good reason it never made it over here... every other word out of the main character's mouth is a racial slur of some sort. The main character is also one of the most vile, horrifyingly disgusting characters I can remember...he tortures his crippled dad, and only ends up "saving the day" because he's trying to bust a chinese restaurant that's a drug front out of pure racism. And when you think he's turned over a new leaf at the end, it turns out it was just a scheme for him to steal a bunch of drug money. Viva L'ESPANA! Fun times!!

I saw a bunch of those FX Interactive bits in Spain too. For budget games their packaging is quite nice. I saw Runaway there, but it was TOTALMENTE EN CASTELLANO which is mostly useless to me. My girlfriend kinda knows Spanish but I don't think she'd want to sit with me for like twenty hours to translate something like this just in case the writing in its native language was markedly superior than its English translation.
I did end up getting some British pack that had both Runaway 1 and 2 in it. It cost like $5 for some US seller and had both games with a slipcover case, a very nice, full color instruction manual, and even some making-of documentaries for the first game.

Sorry, I should have made it clearer that I was referring to the post above mine, hence I was talking about Stupid Invaders. I've never played any of the Runaway games.
